I felt like turning back to Jack Kirby for this latest Panel-by-Panel study, and the second issue of Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth caught my eye as a nice subject, as it further sets up the general plotline after the first issue introduces him. Another fine inking and lettering job by Mike Royer. Here's  a really WILD and fun show devoted to the Star Trek (1960s) TV series, with gobs of amazing and rare records and original material. Once again, many many years of collecting brings forth a veritable phantasmagoria of TREK ... which come to think of it does have some material related to ST the Next Generation as well. This one was a listener favorite in its original run and you'll hear why!

This one was fun to make - on a suggestion from my better half Hillary, we spent one rather drunken night going through all of her vintage 7 inch singles and digitizing them as we whipped them on the turntable, that was then distilled down into this very amusing, fun and ROCKING episode. And it has Dickie Goodman, who I hope to keep popping up on my show. Don't remember Dickie Goodman.-? You'd better look him up. Those of us that grew up listing to Dr. Demento heard a lot of him. Oh, golly, here's another listener favorite. As Dr. Ralph Stanley of the wonderful Stanley Brothers had recently passed away, I whipped out this Stanley Bros. episode that I had on my list of "Ideas for Shows".  Essential Americana music. It makes me tear up on at least one song each time I hear it. That said, it contains several sizzling instrumentals where the brothers and their band are SMOKIN'! Good from stem to stern.

The first installment in a planned series of "Kiddie Records" episodes.  I've always dug spoken word albums and all kinds of children's records and this show brings a mix of music and stories from a wide range of sources, all of 1950s through 1970s vintage.

An example of what they call in the TV biz a "bottle" show, in other words, sometimes I'm just going to play a classic record or two All the Way Through. In this case, it is the first collaboration album between Brian Eno and Moebius and Roedelius ( Cluster ), a very lovely and super-minimalist affair. The second half hour brings excerpts from their second lp, which contains a couple of my favorite Eno vocal efforts. They lived and ate together in a country house while they played and...

Here comes another listener favorite. A lot of careful editing and craftsmanship went into the making of this show. A number of rare tracks (such as material from the making of "Her Satanic Majesty's Request") and material reaching from the 1960s through the 1970s. A great deal of quality Stones is crammed into this one-hour show (or, "A trip down memory lane." as one listener described it - which it is, but given my usual special touches).

Here's one of the more experimental episodes - Since I have a large collection of outdoor / nature sound recordings that I have made at various locations over the years, I planned to do at least one episode of the show using only the sounds of nature as the audio content. So, kick back and enjoy the audio landscape as shaped by the birds, insects, and trees that color these rather mellow pieces.

This episode is the first one where I'm basically cannibalizing a couple of good old DJ sets of mine from years past and re-presenting them in an edited form.  Every year (prior to beginning this current weekly show) I would record a long DJ set of various musics, or two or three, and give them a limited release or broadcast, and many of them weren't heard by many people on the first go-round. Well, after 36 episodes, I finally slipped in one show devoted to MY music. I'll also be spotlighting music eventually by bands that I have been / am in, but this show is a sampler of some of my solo works, from around 2003 up to more recent days.  Some of these got a fairly wide release, and others are more rare. They range from some pretty hard jungle-type beats to very down-tempo drum and bass experiments. See also episodes 057 and 058 for the next two parts in this series!

Ahhh, like a breath of salty sea air, comes this wonderful episode devoted to one of my favorite artists: Martin Denny ! He popularized the new genre of " Exotica " back in 1959 (on records, anyway) based on the success of his live act in Hawaii. In my opinion, he did it better than anyone, although I do enjoy a lot of the records that he inspired. In this episode we hear the entire bizarre 1975 prog rock all-star version of Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf . See the metadata for the cast list. The episode closes out with four cuts from the first self-titled album by the British group U.K . (1978). A hard hour of classical rock indeed!

Having just recently picked up a vinyl copy of the sixth and final record with the original lineup of the band Bad Company , I knew it was time to devote a whole episode to this band I'm fond of. Enjoy an hour of my favorite cuts by members Paul Rodgers , Simon Kirke , Mick Ralphs , and Boz Burrell . Since I forgot to mention him in the show, a big shout out goes to Mel Collins , who played wind instruments on all of their records and was really the fifth member in a way.

In this delightful episode we hear most of the premiere albums by two of my favorite early-1980s bands, and both three-piece units (at that time). From Wales, Young Marble Giant s, and hailing from Scotland, The Cocteau Twins . Hope you enjoy this very rockin' show!

Here comes the second in our ongoing series of occasional Beatles-centric shows.  One of the highlights in this hard-rocking show is the six-song set of instrumental mixes from the lp Rubber Soul , but there are some other very rare goodies here including some solo George Martin and even a cut by Casey Kacem ! Also check out episode #004 for another hour of Beatle-goodies.

Yes, that's right, it's a whole hour devoted to the recordings of three-time Oscar winner Walter Brennan (1894 - 1974). He made a lot of albums and singles from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s and I've always gotten a real kick out of them. Enjoy this 22-cut sampler of all things Brennan !

Here's another "pure" country music episode with cuts from the gold and silver age of country music. This time most of the focus is on country music's reactions to the craze for the mambo and the twist . And we'll hear some cuts on other topics as well (such as tragedy )  because they're just so darned fun. Basically a continuation of episode # 029 Country Fried #1 , so check that one out as well if you dig this kinda thing. Enjoy! See the topics area for the full list of artists...

In this the third Martin Denny - related episode we get down to some record collector nitty gritty stuff as we present a side-by-side comparison between the original 1956 mono recording of his first album EXOTICA and the very different 1958 re-recording for stereo. Not only did the personnel change between the two versions but there are numerous differences in the arrangements of the songs, and we go through the two albums song by song to examine how they re-designed the material in the...
