The Neighborhood Bass Coalition are back! Another hour of experimental (and mostly live gig) noise and breaks from the NBC , in the period from 1996 to 2002; earlier stuff, in other words. This set came out very nice, I think (even out of the three or so shows where I've showcased this band), and features some rare unreleased studio cuts, too! Crank it up!

During my time making a weekly television show in San Francisco (1999-2007) I got into the habit of using an old TV broadcasting gimmick that I call the "Clip Show", in which elements of already-shown episodes are re-cut to make a "new" installment of a show. Whilst trolling through my archive of past radio shows recently, it occurred to me that some disparate episodes might be fun to jumble together in an unfamiliar way, thus creating a "Cut-Up" show, in an almost...

This one was fun to make - on a suggestion from my better half Hillary, we spent one rather drunken night going through all of her vintage 7 inch singles and digitizing them as we whipped them on the turntable, that was then distilled down into this very amusing, fun and ROCKING episode. And it has Dickie Goodman, who I hope to keep popping up on my show. Don't remember Dickie Goodman.-? You'd better look him up. Those of us that grew up listing to Dr. Demento heard a lot of him. Ahhh, like a breath of salty sea air, comes this wonderful episode devoted to one of my favorite artists: Martin Denny ! He popularized the new genre of " Exotica " back in 1959 (on records, anyway) based on the success of his live act in Hawaii. In my opinion, he did it better than anyone, although I do enjoy a lot of the records that he inspired. I also feature a number of cuts from his later period of more "straight" jazz records, which employ his usual minimalist style...

The second in a series of shows devoted to the work of famed film, radio and television soundtrack composer Bernard Herrmann . In this installment we hear the entire score of Alfred Hitchcock's " Vertig o", as well as the first side of the lp recording of the unused " Torn Curtain " soundtrack, which Hitchcock rejected for the film, and another composer was hired; ending their working relationship. The show opens and closes with the intro and outro themes that Herrmann did...

In this the third Martin Denny - related episode we get down to some record collector nitty gritty stuff as we present a side-by-side comparison between the original 1956 mono recording of his first album EXOTICA and the very different 1958 re-recording for stereo. Not only did the personnel change between the two versions but there are numerous differences in the arrangements of the songs, and we go through the two albums song by song to examine how they re-designed the material in the...

This week we bring you one of those rare, uncut, one-hour tapings for radio of You Bet Your Life, about a year before it premiered on television. These long recordings were edited down to make the 30 minute radio episodes. The one, the only --- Groucho !

A music-filled wallow in the 1939 world of OZ. After having discovered (in the Boston Public Library's Archive page) a 78 rpm record set of songs from the film version that was released the same year as the picture, in 1939, I decided to build a show around it, with additional material from the film itself. Many hours of production time later - here is the final result. Enjoy! And turn it up!

Rock along with your pal J.R.R. Tolkien as he presents some poems and songs from his novels, with the help of composer and pianist Donald Swann (of Flanders & Swann fame) and singer William Elvin (no relation to Elven folk, as far as we know); followed by some English folk songs presented by Kathleen Ferrier , Phyllis Spurr , and Herbert Hughes . Another rave-fest, and the first of the third season format change for 2020, wherein I present an all-music show one week and a spoken word or...

We're back to finally finish up playing the last disc of my two-cd release from 2002 Conversations Between Strangers (part one is HERE: https://archive.org/details/TurningTheTables092-ConversationsBetweenStrangersPt1-Mar242018 ). This was an in-studio live performance using mainly original music with uncued and random spoken word and children's record drops throughout. A nutty set with some lovely and unusual pieces in it. The hour finishes out with some Village People cuts from the film Can't...

Whilst dredging the wonderful Boston Public Library 78s collection here in the Archive for a previous show, I began another folder full of "World Music" selections for use in another episode - and here it is. Because I couldn't begin to pronounce 99% of the cut titles or the artists I didn't back-announce the info in the show, and thus do not have a full list of artists for the metadata. Sorry 'bout that! Enjoy it just the same - It came out quite good! I did a lot of pre-production...

As a long-time collector of organ records and an appreciator of keyboards in general, it was only a matter of time until I came across with an all-organ episode of the show. See the TOPICS section above for a full list of the artists herein - it's a fun bunch! I spent a lot of extra time prepping/editing/fussing about with the material and it was a very fun show to present. And because I remembered a favorite in-house-joke-line from a 1968 Spider-Man episode (listen for it!), there's a lot of...
