The Keyboard Code was one of a few publications by Jacob Backes, a stenographer and inventor of the concept of typewriter to replace typesetting, which he called callitypy. The Keyboard Code relies on using punctuation and other shortcuts to double note-taking speed. 

Few of his works survived, and this copy of the book, held at the New York Public Library, had several mutilated pages that could not be scanned.
