What Would an Extra $20,000 Do For You? I thought the answer would be simple. This situation was something I recently went through. Wait, "went through?" Yup, "went through." It was one of the most difficult decisions that I can remember having to make in a long time. Granted, in hindsight the answer was clear. Of course I choose the extra $20,000 to provide more for my family...or did I turn down the offer to stay where we are? Everyone/thing has a number. I don't know how...

Can you and your spouse talk about money? If you're like most couples, you probably do more arguing than talking when it comes to the budget. That's why I've brought Roger Whitney (a.k.a. the Retirement Answerman) onto the show! The Cash Flow Bucket System Roger shares what he calls The Bucket System: a simple method of budgeting that helps you spend less time managing your money, and more time with your family. Trust me: it has made a tremendous impact on Loretta and I. We went from arguing...

Seriously? Well…yea, seriously. Chances are, what we have in mind to “do through Christ’s strength” and what was originally being referenced are two different things. Photo courtesy of Chris Sardenga Click to listen   But it could mean something different. If Michael Jordan or Warren Buffet wrote those words, they would mean something different, based on what we know about each person. Jordan? His would probably apply to basketball. Buffett? Something about investing. So what does...

What's the single most important thing a father can do for his children? In this episode, I have the privilege of interviewing my friend Jackie Bledsoe. He writes at his blog Growing Family Leaders.  I came across one of his blog posts a few months ago, and decided I had to ask him to share what it is exactly that a father needs to do to love his children. The answer was surprising simple:  Love their mother. Jackie went on to share not just what to do, but how to do it, through what...

We generally value things based on what we paid.   So how do we determine the value of salvation? For the longest time, I've understood the death of Jesus on an intellectual level.  It never connected with me in my heart.  I could probably write a 15 page paper on the theological importance and implications of his death, but that's where it would stop. Until I realized that there was something almost everyone can relate to:  the relationship between a parent and a child. It hit me like a...

Does how you listen to someone say how much (or how little) you value them? In this episode, I share the what we communicate by how we listen. There are three types of listening: Fake - Blatantly ignoring someone. Passive - Driving in a car while listening to the radio; small talk in the doctor's office. Active - Valentine's Day dinner with your spouse. I quickly realized that how we listened showed how much or how little we valued them... Passive listening = Low value Active listening = High...

I was hanging out with our two daughters like any other time, but this time it was different. It's much more than your standard "how-to" guide to being present. In fact, it's not about external activities, like turning off your phone, etc. Instead, it's about what's going on in your own head.   I share the two parts to the attitude of being present: 1. FOCUS on what's in front of me (and I don't mean just the physical aspect) 2. IGNORE what's next. ### Question: How do you manage the...

Faith is spiritual first, physical second. See Mark 2:1-12 when a paralyzed man is forgiven first, and healed second. Faith is simple and uncomplicated. See Mark 9:9-11 when the disciples come off of the mountain and don’t understand what “rise in three days” mean. Okay, but why does this matter? Over the past few weeks I’ve discussed hot button issues. My confession about the CIA torture report, Sean Palmer’s insights on race, culture, and the church, and last week’s candid discussion about sexual identity and faith all shared one thing in common. Easy to talk about, harder to receive. When grace is extended, there are two parts to it: Receiving it (we have the option to reject it), and Accepting it (we have the option to keep from internalizing the grace). This episode is...

Is it okay to stand by and do nothing? If you work in an office environment like I do, then you have undoubtedly seen the cliques that exist and the gossip that can happen. Or maybe you get together with the fellas from your small group, without "that one guy" who is usually ostracized. Those are all things that we can change immediately, simply by our actions (or lack thereof). What about when women go to the doctor and have their pregnancies terminated?  Or racial issues that...

I was reading the book "The Parent You Want To Be" and it made me stop and think: Am I really making time for what's important to me?  Even then, how can I make the time? In this episode, I share 5 ways to slow down your busy life.  Some of them are added activities, and others are "subtracted" activities.  But either way, one of them is sure to get you started on slowing down your life to let you focus on your priorities. 1.Make homemade bread from scratch.  We did...

It all started at a dinner party. We had just spent that past few minutes talking about each other's background, and really seemed to connect. I had already introduced him to my wife, Loretta, and we were already thinking about having dinner with them sometime.   But then I was caught off guard. We talked about kids and all sorts of things...and then he introduced me to his partner. Maybe that caught you off guard...or maybe it didn't As society has an on-going discussion about homosexuality...
As a mid-level manager, seminary student, speaker, podcaster, husband, and father, it’s extremely easy for me to get overwhelmed. In fact, it was just a few weeks ago that I did hit a wall. My passion for podcasting was running low, my patience wasn’t where it needed to be with my family, and I was coming close to simply burning out. That’s what led me to create what I call an Annual Plan.   Three Benefits of an Annual Plan Provide a glimpse of the future – I can know what it coming...

"She's not my wife because she's hot; she's hot because she's my wife." That quote (my own) was what got me started on thinking about how my decisions impact not just myself, but those around me.  In this episode, I share the 3 things that happen when you own your decisions: You're invested in the outcome, it reveals your motives, and you set the tone. Also, I share how my wife and I met, and why I hope my daughters never meet their husbands this way!
In the midst of the busy Christmas season, we often hear “Jesus is the reason for the season.” But why is that?  It wasn’t just his birth that makes it significant.  It’s what his birth made possible that makes it so significant.  Think about it this way: Without his birth, he would’ve never died; without his death, he would’ve never been brought back to life; without his resurrection, we wouldn’t have eternal life.  I'll unpack this along with share what two words really...

How do you handle this? The past few months have been challenging to say the least: The police shootings in St. Louis and New York have reignited heated discussions about race. The CIA released a report that detailed their torture of terror suspects, which caused me to pause and evaluate my faith. And just a few days ago, ISIS executed 21 Egyptian Christians.   We have to talk about it. And as Christians, we need to be able to talk about it intelligently. The problem is that if our Christian...

I never thought making a list would improve my marriage! I originally saw Tony Morgan do something similar, and decided to give it a shot myself.  Here are ten politically incorrect reasons that our marriage works: We still listen to our song. We stay in shape for each other. We date. A lot. We actively work on loving our in-laws. We’re committed to resolving conflicts before going to bed. She cooks for me…and enjoys it. I keep my head clean shaven for her. We hold hands everywhere we...

Too many times, date night with your wife falls by the wayside. Maybe it’s the kids, maybe it’s work, maybe it’s money, and maybe you’re too tired. But what it really comes down to is one thing…actually, one person: you Don’t risk your marriage You can make date night a priority, or you can make something else the priority. Let me explain it like this: You can make your marriage a priority, or something else will become the priority. And when your marriage stops being the...

It can’t just be me. I don’t know why, but I feel like I’ve been doing a terrible job of balancing work and family…you know, the “work/life balance” thing. I’m not putting my phone down when I come home for the day. I’m thinking about other projects while I’m at dinner with my family. I’m consistently staying late at work, even though there’s always one more thing to do.   So here is what I did… I asked people I trusted; people who were further along in their journey...

Sometimes it can get lost… With all of the meal prep, shopping, cleanup, and family, the real meaning of Thanksgiving can get lost. But just because the meaning can get lost, doesn’t mean it will. The meaning of Thanksgiving is decided *by* you, not *for* you. There are so many reasons to become stressed about Thanksgiving: You or a loved one are working during Thanksgiving (I am!) The commercialism sucks all of the joy out of the holiday. The planning, meal prep, and clean up are...

How do you decide which opportunities to take? Maybe the first thought that came to your mind was money.  Or maybe it was your career.  Then again, it could have been family. Our values guide our decisions. The first thing that probably comes to your mind is "family."  You value your family (that's why you listen to this podcast), and it's a real priority for you.  But "family" can seem a little abstract.   What does it look like in real life when your family is your...

The danger of the "Routine." For some, this is their life, day in and day out: get up in the morning, quick workout, go to work, come home from work, maybe eat dinner with the family, put the kids to bed, collapse on the bed exhausted, chat with your wife for ten minutes before both of you accidentally fall asleep. This is what I call the "Routine." It's letting life pass you by whether you mean to or not. Your kids? They'll be okay. Your marriage? Hopefully it'll work out....

“Help me overcome my belief!” I’ve had plenty of instances where I have questioned what I believe. Sometimes it comes from reading something new; other times it comes from a discussion with someone; and sometimes it just comes from my own doubts. The most powerful prayer. Wrong. That’s why I love what happens in Mark 9:17-24. The boys father makes the conscious decision to believe, then prays one of the most powerful prayers: Help me overcome my belief! It's not explicitly discussed in the Bible... But Jesus does say something about not storing up treasures for ourselves on earth. I save a little bit every month for my retirement.  I think most people do (or at least want to).   But I can't help to think of Matthew 6:19-20, when Jesus says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth...But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven."
