In 1990 Hopkins was hired by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office where he attended High Sierra Law Enforcement Academy. In 1993, he was transferred to the Patrol Division of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office where he worked until 1997 as a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer, G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education And Training) Officer and one of the first CLO (Community Liaison Officers).
