Rising crime rates are of growing concern in Denver, across Colorado, and throughout the nation. The trauma suffered due to the prolonged stress of the COVID-19 pandemic may be contributing to the elevated levels of violence. The proliferation of illegal guns, the opioid crisis, cheap fentanyl, and newer, deadlier versions of meth, have resulted in an explosion of drug addictions and desperate behavior fueling crime on our streets.
Addressing the current challenges requires a coordinated approach that includes local, state, and federal action, as well as thoughtful and effective collaboration between law enforcement, addiction and treatment resource providers and the community at large.
Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen outlines what the data has indicated as root causes, and identifies as hotspots of criminal activity across the city. Denver Police look to work with city agencies, and the community to affectively address the challenge to public safety. Denver's Department of Public Health and Environment is taking a holistic approach to help residents access the resources available to better manage trauma, address substance misuse, and get residents the help they need.
