The residents want better, and I don't blame them, I do too. - Mayor Pro Tem / Ward 4 Councilman Robbie Guard
After this staff presentation at the May 4, 2021 Council meeting, Mayor Bob Fox encouraged residents to report street issues and Guard added that we all want better, but it is also good to understand how the City currently prioritizes street repair funding.
City Engineer Kelly Green and Asst. Public Works Department Director Casey Brunke (our former City Engineer) presented the City's plan for street repairs and funding to the Council, media and public. Of note:
0:48 - There are 226 MILES of City streets (like driving to STL and back) 1:17 - Prior to 2010, streets weren't required to be built on the right kind of foundation. "It is detrimental to our roadways" said the City Engineer. 2:27 - All Cape streets are not "City" streets" - responsible agencies include the Special Road District, MODOT and several private streets. 3:08 - We evaluate 100 miles of city streets every year to rate each section to track progress and prioritze repair projects. 3:45 - The City has 33 MILLION sq. ft. of pavement. Whereas potholes and rough patches need repair, most of those millions of square feet are in good shape. 4:38 - Funding sources for street repair: $5,000,000/year - TTF - Large projects (and now some maintenance) $500,000/year for maintenance work $90,000/year for quick fix pothole repairs and "bandaid" type work until better repairs can be completed.
