to be continue to fund junkets such as the streetcar. >> it's one way to pay more more officers and resources. chair of council community safety committee julie wants that explored first. but the possibility of a tax increase is on the table too as money keeps going out. >> with the property reval that happened at the county level, we lost millions of dollars. thth doesn't mysteriously get replaced. >> how much of a tax increase? we could learn more of that in detail on wednesday when council starts to go over that budget for crucial services like police, fire, trash, and roads. no final decisions will be made until may at least. and we will be there to follow the entire discussion along the way. reporting live in uptown, jenna deery, channel 9 eyewitness news. now we've mapped out the scenes of the six shootings across charlotte this week. you can see the violence was not contained to just one neighborhood. now everything started tuesday when people were shot at four different scenes during the same night.

the shootings. 24-year-old michael jeffreys junior was killed at this apartment complex off wt harris boulevard yesterday. two others were shot during an argument. police in east charlotte haven't said if anyone faces charges. our coverage of charlotte's week of violence continues online at look for all the stories on the home page. all new tonight, at 6:00, a man who was shot during a road rage fight last month has been charged. today police told channel 9 ryan baret is charged with simple assault. he was in the passenger seat when kannapolis officers say his girlfriend dakota cosby drove into the back of another car. she's also charged. police say the couple fought with the other driver who ended up shooting barret. investigators say the other driver was protecting himself. tonight this man is locked up accused of possessing and distributing child pornography from a registered daycare. police found the porn that contained minors as young as

tina terry asked how police found out about this and what's next for the facility in charlotte. it was clear that people in this registered child daycare didn't want any visitors when we arrived. a large no trespassing sign was posted on the door. neighbors say police raided the house just days ago. records show police arrested brian alexander foster, a warrant says police found pornography containing graphic images of children between 5 and 15 and that foster kept and distributed it. >> you have to be very cautious and know what's going on in your surroundings. and know who you let watch your kids. you never know what's going on. there's a lot of sick people. >> neighbor ben told us the daycare has been in operation for years. he says he even sent his grandchildren there when they were young. >> i think they went there about a couple weeks. that's when they were little

>> state records show the daycare is licensed to keep kids up to age 12. it was inspected just last month on the 22nd. no violations were found. >> you see the parents come and pick thacked kids up everyday. they drop them off in the morning time. >> at this point, it's not clear foster's role at the facility or how police found out about the charge. in north charlotte, tina terry, channel 9 eyewitness news. somebody at the house told us the daycare has shut down. but leaders with the state couldn't confirm if or when that happened. nancy reagan's funeral was held today in california where the former first lady was remembered for her remarkable life. >> god bless nancy. mrs. ronald reagan. first lady. >> first lady michelle obama, president george w. bush, former first ladies laura bush, hillary clinton, and roselyn carter were there in attendance the former first lady passed

so far nine cars have been broken into. in the fort mill area in baxter village. near highway 160. deputies say even though most doors were locked, thieves just smashed out windows to get in. they took computers, wallets, purses, and backpacks. new tonight, channel 9 uncovered plans to build a 14 story hotel right on lake norman in cornelius. the developer of the project still has to apply through the planning board. but eyewitness news reporter joe bruno found neighbors near the proposed site want to squash any momentum before that happens. new homes are being built here on water view drive. but in a couple years, a hotel could be put right in their backyards. >> i just can't envision it. >> it caught everyone on water view drive by surprise when they found out a developer is trying to put a 14 story hotel and convention center right next to their homes. to give you an idea, that's

center city holiday inn in uptown. channel 9 has obtained images of the proposal. it would be the first hotel on lake norman complete with more than 300 rooms and a beach. the town's planning director calls the proposed hotel a game changer. and says it would bring lots of money into cornelius. but neighbors say it won't change cornelius for the better. >> everybody actually on this street, i know the adjacent neighborhoods have expressed extreme, you know, dissatisfaction for that. >> neighboring homeowners are preparing to fight. community meetings are being planned to rally support against the project. >> we want growth in the area, but i don't think this is something that adds to tear ya. >> the developer has to bring this to the planning board and duke will have to approve widening lake norman. charlotte water will need to be consulted and the entire area has to be rezoned. that's too much work for a hotel they want nothing to do

>> this is not a big city. people take the bus here. they walk with their dogs and kids. they jog. this is not a place for a big hotel. >> town leaders say they don't think traffic will be an issue. west catawba avenue will be widened in 2020. joe bruno, channel 9 eyewitness news. the land is currently owned by a man in florida who is working with a developer on the plan. channel 9 reached out to him but didn't hear back. a man who was trying to drive away from police in the heart of uptown charlotte is in jail tonight charged with injuring a pedestrian and running away. police tried to pull over moore tuesday afternoon on west trade street. they say he ran a light and hit a man who was crossing trade street at north trion. dean nelson was walking behind the victim and saw the whole thing happen. >> he went back to avoid the northbound cars here. and as he did so. he hit the individual that was right in front of me. if i had been two seconds earlier, it would have been me.

today he's out of the hospital and he should make a full recovery. that's good news. we checked and found it's the fifth time in the last five years that somebody walking has been hit at that intersection in the heart of the city. these men have been charged with breaking into an epicenter restaurant during the middle of the night. eyewitness news was at the uptown charlotte location as police walked marcus and cory parker out of the man drake. the arrest happened after midnight yesterday morning. police haven't said what the suspects were trying to take. both faced breaking and centering charges. marcus was just arrested back in january. accused of leading police on a high-speed chase. officers say he was driving a stolen car and crashed in a charlotte neighborhood. in less than an hour family and friends will gather for a vigil to remember two managers killed outside a hickory mcdonald's last week rochelle

parking lot of the restaurant on highway 321. her former boyfriend is charged in their murders. the vigil will be at 7:00 tonight at the mountain grove baptist church. members have launched an effort to save the oldest black church in gaston county. the doors have been closed at st. paul missionary baptist church for the past two years. the church was established in 1927. but the staple and part of the roof have fallen over the years. today members had a bake sale. the first in a series of fundraisers to try to revive that historic church. >> it's the mother of the churches here in gastonia. you have different churches that have come from st. paul missionary baptist church. >> members say they need to raise $60,000 to make the repairs. they also launched an online fundraising drive. you know about the warmth. we hit 80 degrees in charlotte today. i'll be looking ahead at the rain: or the lack of it.

pr this is channel 9 eyewitness news. covering the carolinas. there's still time to cast an early ballot. and thousands of people across the charlotte region are doing that right now. when it's all said and done, elections officials expect around 45,000 people to vote early in mecklenburg county. about 15,000 more than the last presidential primary. definitely some excitement. we wanted the know how many people switched their party affiliation before the primary. eyewitness news anchor john paul dug through the numbers and shows us what he found. it's been very busy here in mecklenburg county with just one they left in early voting. go ahead and take a look. and now we're getting an idea of just how many people have switched party affiliation. >> photo id.

what early voting sites have looked like. >> well it's just convenient for us right now. >> the candidates are taking note, making stops in north carolina. pushing for votes. but they may also be pushing voters to switch parties. >> so i switched to independent. i'm glad i did that. especially for this election. >> cliff little made the switch years ago. but thousands are doing the same thing this year. take a look at what we found. more than 20,000 people changed their party affiliation from january 1st through february 19th. the last day to switch for the primary. and here's the break down, more than 10,000 democratics switched to either republican or unaffiliated. nearly 4,000 republicans switched to democratic or unaffiliated and more than 5,000 unaffiliated voters picked a new party. we asked voters why. i feel like the candidates are fluctuating a lot. views are coming out more and people are real switching over their vote. donald trump has stirred emotions up in the race.

mayor jill swain. >> bernie sanders hopes his message will resonate with the people of north carolina. he held a rally today at memorial stadium in raleigh. sanders told the crowd if they want a candidate who will fight to make sure the government belongs to the people and not to campaign contributors then he is their guy. if that happens we're going to win in north carolina and the other states as well. sanders says voter turn outings will be key to a win in the primary on tuesday. new tonight in the last three hours, channel 9 learned democratic candidate hillary clinton will be in charlotte on monday. she is scheduled to be at the grady cole center near cpcc for an event that starts at 7:30. the doors open at 5:30. count on channel 9 for complete coverage of the event in the race to the white house. we have a special section dedicated to our election coverage at i can tell you what i vote

like today, steve, can you deliver? >> i wish i could. let me do the politician shuffle on that one. we are looking at a beautiful sunset. that's the way to start a weekend. high clouds on live early warning doppler 9. if you have outdoor plans, no rain, that's good news and it's plenty warm. mid 70s in most neighborhoods. east of the mountains, 75 in charlotte. it's not exactly chilly in the high country. hornets take on the pistons uptown tonight. if you're uptown for the game, or maybe just for dinner, you can leave the coat at home. no rain and mild temperatures slowly falling back through the 60s. here's a look at the future cast over night tonight, temperature wise, find your neighborhood on the map. same in charlotte and hickory. and not a lot cooler in the high country. this is something we'll have to keep an eye on. more moisture means more clouds and the risk of fog. when these visibilities dip below about half a mile as you can see on many neighborhoods, especially between charlotte and i-40, we'll be looking at

tomorrow morning and late tonight. same story across the high country. the weekend forecast hasn't changed. the greatest chance of rain will be on sunday. neither day will be a wash out. low 70s tomorrow. low lower 70s again on sunday. lots of 5ks this weekend. we chose the weddington run that honors anyone that's survived cancer. watch out for fog first thing in the morning. mid 60s at 10:00 a.m. the low cloud cover trying to break up mid-morning. a few showers confined to the mountains tomorrow. a few showers in the metro tomorrow afternoon. but not a lot. tomorrow won't be a wet day. it'll be warm. but not as warm as today. i mean come on. 81 degrees. wow. we had mid 70s by lunch time. and that's pretty much where we stay. mid to upper 70s tomorrow afternoon. high country where there's a better shot for showers. we'll be looking at readings around 60. 49ers baseball, unc charlotte, small shower risk.

temperatures in the low 70s. app state, you have showers rolling in in the afternoon. temperatures in the low 60s as you take on georgia southern. showers tomorrow night confined again north of charlotte. but on sunday, all that rain we've been talking about and you've seen the pictures of to the west finally makes a run at us. but there will be heavier showers and lake norman north through sunday afternoon and early sunday evening. an initial look at rain totals. an inch to maybe more than that over the high country. charlotte area, about a half inch of rain when all is said and done. that's not a bad thing. we've been dry for one. and it's also going to help you wash out tree pollen and give you temporary relief. best chance of rain on sunday. don't forget to set your clocks forward before you go to bed. the warmth sticks around into next week. >> we're looking forward to that. we need this rain.

and they can do so tonight with a win against detroit. every game is important with just 19 left. but today has a great significance as so many jockey for post season position. >> everybody is trying to make their playoff push. the other team was in the conference. also right there in the playoff standings. you know. it's extremely important. >> the charlotte 49ers saw their season end in birmingham last night. a nine point lead evaporated in a blink against tennessee state. it was a 27-2 halftime run that did the 49ers in. it came to an end in the quarter finals of the conference u.s.a. tournament. he got a little emotional talking about his team after game. >> i told the guys in the locker room to keep their heads high, because these guys fought hard for me all yearlong. and we got nothing to be ashamed of and we're going to get better. we're going to add pieces to what we have.
