>> and then there's the clash that's pitting donald trump against pope francis and it is taking a new turn this morning. when the pope said trump's plan to build a wall between the u.s. and mexico was not christian, trump fired back calling the pope disgraceful but overnight, trump backtracked a bit. >> it's "your voice, your vote" and abc's ray raimundi gathering the latest overnight starting with the democrats. >> reporter: the stakes couldn't be higher. the presidential hopefuls hot on the campaign trail. the democrats crisscrossing through the state of nevada. >> i have an election that's about real change. not promises you can't keep. >> in the eyes of america they'll been nevada. >> reporter: both democratic candidates facing voters at a televised town hall meeting answering tough questions on topics like immigration, privacy and their records. >> maybe it's that senator sanders wasn't really a democrat until he decided to run for president.

bernie sanders are still in a statistical tie. kendis and reena, back to you. >> ray raimundi, ray, thanks so much. trump found himself stumbling for the right words when he was confronted about the war in iraq. the republican front-runner has made his opposition of that war a cornerstone of his campaign. but in a newly uncovered interview with howard stern from 2002 trump said he supported the invasion when he was asked about that statement last night, trump claimed that he didn't remember the interview. >> it was probably the first time i was asked about it. by the time the war started, i was against it and shortly thereafter i was really against it. >> trump also refused to say whether he thought president george w. bush was lying when he said that iraq had weapons of mass destruction, a charge he leveled at the last republican debate. and one touching moment on the trail. ohio governor john kasich giving a long hug to a college student who cold kasich he gave him hope. brett smith said a friend had

his parents divorced and his dad lost his job. kasich told the young man the lord will give you strength, i promise. >> very unusual moment and touching one there. in washington, d.c. a final farewell begins today for the late supreme court justice antonin scalia. his body will lie in repose in the great hall of the supreme court. he died on saturday during a trip to texas. president obama and the first lady will pay their respects at the court this afternoon. and vice president joe biden will attend scalia's funeral mass tomorrow but biden says he has no interest in replacing the justice. the vice president said he has no desire to sit on the high court even if he was asked but he also said, you never tell a president for certain you wouldn't do anything. the vice president also criticized republicans for saying the president should not nominate a replacement. the u.s. has hit north korea with more sanctions because of its nuclear program. president obama is quietly signing the punitive measure overwhelmingly approved by

it comes as the u.s. and china are in delicate negotiations over new u.n. sanctions. one senate sponsor of the u.s. measure hopes that china will notice the strong support for sanctions. back here at home more than two months after the terror attacks in san bernardino, the fbi tells abc news it's still not ruling out the possibility that a third militant was at that scene. the agency is also still looking for a hard drive that was used by the shooters. agents searched the home of syed farook's brother. no arrests were made but several boxes and a computer and other items were removed. the fbi does have syed farook's iphone but they can't get any information out of it. the data on it encrypted and apple remains firm in refusing to unlock it despite that court order. well, now google, facebook, twitter and microsoft all say unlocking the phone for the fbi might set a precedent for other cases. well, there are more than two dozen grass fires burning in

that's the most in years. officials say numerous homes were lost. but they don't know how many. the city of tulsa has been filled with smoke from the fires. firefighters are using helicopters to dump water on the fires and officials say that the fires are not as intense now. well, more dramatic video as a huge brush fire near kansas city creates a fire tornado. the fire is on prison property but it has closed a highway there. firefighters believe it was started by a lawn mower. so far it has consumed about 1,500 acres. it's about 75% contained. no homes are threatened at this time. okay, so it has rained every day for the past eight days in the pacific northwest and as you can see on the radar there, it's not going to change before the weekend is over. the latest storm will also drop another 6 to 1 inches of fresh snow on the cascade mountains. elsewhere it'll feel like spring in the midwest and south with incredibly warm temperatures for this time of year but strong winds will increase the dangers of more brush fires but it will be

leak that sickened and displaced residents of a los angeles neighborhood for months has been plugged and now the clock is ticking for the thousands who fled the knoxous fumes to return home but despite assurances that the air quality is safe many residents are not so sure. some are fearful poisonous chemicals may have settled in their homes. a new study finds more than 58,000 of the nation's bridges are in repair. placed end to end they would span from new york down to miami and include some of the most well-known and well-traveled like the brooklyn bridge, memorial bridge in washington, d.c. and the 250 most heavily traveled bridges were all built before 1970. we do have a correction to make this morning. earlier this week in a story about the carrier company moving hundreds of jobs to mexico, we incorrectly characterized the company's reason for doing so. we said that carrier claimed it never got government stimulus money. it was promised. carrier never made that statement.

twisted so instinct. >> reporter: all survived. one in a neck brace, a 16-year-old male in critical condition. the chopper coming down in pearl harbor near the "uss arizona" memorial. >> that was scary. we were thinking we would see a dead body come up. >> reporter: it was clear the tail rotor was not turning and the sound from the engine in erratic. scott rife is a helicopter pilot for kabc. >> it appears he lost power and disengaged the rotor system from the engine. may have flared too high and didn't have enough energy to cushion the landing. >> reporter: the bell 206 was built in 1979 and owned by what appears to be a one-helicopter tour company called genesis. the surviving pilot should be able to tell investigators exactly what went wrong. david kerley, abc news, washington. one more item involving pope francis. his eyebrow raising comment about the zika virus outbreak.
