crash occurred. i-40 opened after a number of crashes in alamance county. what may have started the how donald trump deals with violence at his rallies. thank you for joining us on this monday after we switch to hope you are doing well. i'm renee chou. >> i'm bill leslie. a little bit sleepy eyed this morning but we are forging ahead, doing our best to bring you the news and latest as we do every morning. >> we have been up for about four hours or so. we are getting into the groove. >> is a rough start monday morning because daylight shifts back one hour which means the sun rises later, the sunset is later. we have more daylight in the evening, less in the morning. here we are under 7:01, barely starting to see things lighten up. part of the problem is we are stuck under clouds.

low cloud cover and fog near the virginia line. it is warm, 63 in durham, 64 wake forest. town by town 59 in roxboro where it is foggy. 59 s. hill, 64 in fayetteville and clinton. expect temperatures to remain in the mid-70s by lunchtime, and during the afternoon the clouds will break a little bit however there may be a few patchy showers. high of 80 degrees. this evening chance of thunderstorms. we could have large hail or damaging winds with those storms. we will talk about the threats coming up. brian is here taking a look at the ramp closure at wade avenue and i-40. what's going on? >> pretty serious accident from 40 westbound to wade avenue. we will take a live look at the camera. this is i-40 and trinity road.

wade avenue interchange, exit 289. this is leaving the chapel hill road area heading toward wade avenue. at this point the ramp is blocked and will likely remain blocks for some time. we have a crew on the way to get details and we'll let you know what we find out. let's talk about alternate routes. if you are trying to get to wade avenue from the cary area or west side of raleigh, consider 440 up to wade avenue. if you are taking 40 westbound, get off at the chapel hill road interchange and take edwards mill road up to wade avenue. very likely that that road will remain closed for some time. noticing a big effect on traffic on i-40 westbound but that will be another point of concern as we head deeper into the 7:00 hour. i want to show you the entire viewing area, taking a look at the road weather index. some of us seeing fog north and west of the triangle.

allow extra time as you head out. let's look at the trip from eastern wake county on the knightdale bypass, that camera at 64 business is in and out but traffic flowing freely heading toward 540 toward the belt line. no big delays. the trip from 64 business to 440 taking eight minutes on the bypass. new overnight, a pinehurst man is dead after a single vehicle crash. a car driven by donald myles ran off the road into some trees. this happened on highway 15-501 on spring lake drive at 11:30 last night. firefighters had to cut the roof off the car to reach myles inside. he was the only one inside. the 54-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. the cause of the crash is under investigation. i-40 is back open in

the numbers are surprising. more than 100 vehicles involved and 20 people hurt. the interstate was shut down near burlington for hours. what rose may have been a factor, and rubbernecking could have caused others. this is a picture from kristin morris who says she is lucky to be alive. the white car is hers. we are told no one was seriously hurt in any of the crashes. the presidential candidates are crisscrossing the east coast today and the midwest as well on the final day of campaigning before five critical primaries tomorrow. >> among them, our state, florida and ohio, which could determine if the republican field goes down to two. tracie potts is in washington with more on the campaigning, plus reaction to violent weekend protest that trump events. >> reporter: five states vote tomorrow with hundreds of

warner cable channel 1255 if you want to check it out. wral's david crabtree and laura leslie will have the results and what they mean for voters. a wake county deputy walked away unharmed after wrapping his patrol car around a tree. take a look at this video, most of the impact is on the passenger side. troopers say it happened yesterday afternoon, the deputy was responding to a call when he hit a water bottle during a rain shower and loss control. officers made an arrest in connection to a nightclub stabbing. douglas hicks is charged with assault with a deadly weapon. he was arrested on scene after man was stabbed at mirage nightclub. the victim, derek etheridge, was taken to the hospital for injuries to his torso and troopers believe they know who is responsible for a deadly crash writing morning. they say celco ramirez was

terry lopez. he died at the scene. troopers say ramirez was driving with a revoked license. he will be charged with hit and run plus death by motor vehicle. march madness is officially upon us. time to get your brackets ready. >> two triangle teams are on their way to the ncaa men's basketball tournament. unc earns the number one seed in the east, they will play the winner of the florida gulf coast and fairleigh dickinson gave. north carolina doesn't have to travel far, they play thursday night in raleigh with tipoff at 7:20.

seven marines and four national guardsmen were killed when their helicopter crashed. in their honor, sergeant justin hulett brought together seven groups of military members to run relay style in the marine grade armorial mold -- memorial march. >> it is really for the families, you know, just to show them that we are still here for them, we care about them, we love them and it's a family. >> with 45 pound sacks on their backs, the teams are carrying a marine paddle and played with the fallen soldiers names. cary academy students who spend spring break in cuba returned home. last year for the first time the scuba club leadership at the school plan to diving and cultural expedition to cuba. the group flew in and out of havana, spending a total of four nights in the city. students visited communities in the cuban countryside.

and now -- well, it was kind of dark. >> i'm going to take a nap >> go ahead, bill. it is a late -- it is a little bit great out there this morning, after lunchtime we see the clouds dissipating. we have potential for clouds out there, will talk about the timeline of rain. because of rain last night we are dealing with falcon roxboro as well as henderson , oxford, up toward roanoke rapids. all of the towns near the virginia line seeing some fog this morning. people are getting around okay but you can see it looks a little bit sox in this morning around roxboro. 64 is the temperature at the airport with a calm win, dewpoint 63. plenty of moisture in the atmosphere, when you step out it will feel monkey. temperatures are warm, mid-60s, 64 raleigh and fayetteville, 63

in goldsboro. visibility, no trouble from raleigh to rocky mount but we have cloud cover. we are dealing with clouds across the viewing area. they are sitting on the ground from roxboro over toward south hill making foggy conditions. if you are heading north of raleigh, plan extra time. watch out for kids at the bus stop in those areas. i don't think we will see fog anywhere else than seeing in your the virginia line. this is the next system that approaches us, it's going to be zipping on by quickly. ahead of it we have a few showers and when it arrives we have a chance for thunderstorms. i will show you that on futurecast. expect through lunchtime it will be cloudy but after lunch we begin to clear skies out a little bit. we returned to partly cloudy skies and from 1:00 until 5:00 a couple of isolated showers pop-up. you may want to keep your umbrella handy. not everybody will see rain this afternoon but there will be a few showers. later on after dinner expect a round of thunderstorms to pop through, it will be similar to

threat will be from wind damage or hail. we get into the day tomorrow, it looks beautiful, we start with cloud cover but end with sunshine. tuesday and wednesday both look great. back to today, our greatest threat will be hail out of the storms. we have severe hail which is the size of a quarter raider. our winter threat is moderate for today, flood and tornado threat is actually fairly low. 79, high temperature for this afternoon. we have an elevated risk of severe weather from raleigh westward. that's when we have the best chance of seeing scattered hail and wind damage possible as well. our primary election forecast tomorrow looks good. plenty of sunshine. polls open at 57 degrees and close at 70 degrees. much cooler weekend and a chance for showers saturday and sunday. brian if you're taking a look at the accident on wade avenue.

westbound to wade avenue. we will take another look at the camera here at 7:20. we are hearing reports that that ramp will likely be blocked through the rest of the morning commute. we need to think about an alternate route. we have a crew on the way to get details on the crash and will have updates as we learn more. let's zoom in and give you ideas about alternate routes. we should point out as people are trying to heading out toward wade avenue and finding the ramp closed, we are seeing significant backups are starting to form between chapel hill road and wade avenue interchange. consider getting off at chapel hill road, taking that from edwards mill road and use 440 as an alternate route. by the way there are a couple of minor accidents, one on jones franklin road and western boulevard in another at edwards mill road and wade avenue. consider using that edwards mill road alternate or 442 get to wait. this will be with us through

demand accused and exonerated in the murder of a winston-salem newspaper editor was found dead in a car. darryl hunt was found dead in a car near winston-salem university. he was tried and proven innocent by dna in february 2004. he was missing nine days before being found. he severed from a medical condition that require treatment. they did not say how he died. we know that his name of a man accused of breaking into a home and barricading himself inside for several hours. darrell hester junior broke into a home yesterday and was confronted by a couple inside. he fired a gun into the ground as he left. shortly afterwards, he entered an unoccupied home on morganton road. police and a s.w.a.t. team surrounded the home until

incident in the afternoon. witnesses say he came out of the home after a police chief bought him a sandwich and pack of cigarettes. he faces several charges including burglary and breaking and entering. two murders shocked a small community in johnston county. a newton grove man was found dead in his home. he was discovered along with a woman. her name and relationship to the man of mystery until now. that woman's mother talked with wral not only about her grief about a growing list of questions. after seeing new stories about the shooting, a woman who only wanted to be identified as speak. she said one of the victims was her 24-year-old daughter, jessica piatt, who was at the home of matt jones in newton grove to do someone's hair. her mother says she does not know of anyone who would want to hurt her daughter. >> she was my best friend. she was everything i had in this world.

details coming up right here. it is 7:26, i'm renee chou. your top story, traffic. we have a closure on i-40. >> pretty serious accident blocking the ramp from 40 westbound on to wade avenue. this is a slight look at the camera. you can see where police have blocked the ramp. we are hearing there are pretty serious injuries with the accident. we have a crew on the scene and hope to have details as our news continues on fox50. very likely that ramp will remain close to the morning. you can see a backup between us- 1 and wade avenue on 40 westbound. if you are trying to get to wade avenue from cary, consider using 440, or edwards mill road, from there you can pick up wade avenue north of pnc arena. there are a couple of accidents including on edwards mill road on wade avenue, not causing any

his name has not been released. several presidential candidates and their spouses carolina today. >> they are focusing on the tar heel state before voters go to the polls in the primary. mikaya thurmod joins us to tell us who is coming at where they will be. >> reporter: good morning. candidate, donald trump, will be campaigning in hickory. candidate, bernie sanders, will be in charlotte this afternoon. hillary clinton will be in the queen city this evening. that is just the beginning of north carolina campaign appearances. nearly 24 hours out from the presidential primary, and all eyes are on north carolina. campaign appearances from candidates start this morning and run into the evening. up first, donald trump has a 10:00 a.m. rally at a university. trump who's has had several rowdy rally says he will start pressing charges against people that cause trouble. hillary clinton returns to

last week. she will speak with voters in charlotte at the grady call her husband and former president bill clinton will make a stop in eastern north wife. he is scheduled to appear at the greenville hilton hotel. at 8:30. hillary clinton's democratic rival, bernie sanders, will be in the queen city. his rally will be held at the pnc music pavilion. doors open at 1:30 p.m. republican presidential candidate, ted cruz, canceled his north carolina appearance scheduled for this afternoon. on sunday a spokesperson from his campaign announced that his wife would appear at the event is scheduled to begin at three clock p.m. as you can see, you almost need a scorecard just to keep up with this. wral will have team coverage of all of the presidential

we will also have coverage of key races on wral news. >> join us for our primary election special at 9:00 on wral 2, that is 5.2 or time warner cable channel 1255. wral's david crabtree and laura leslie will have the results and what they mean for north carolinians. police are characterizing it as an ambush. the deadly shooting of a police officer in maryland. it happened in landover. a gunman fired at the first officer he saw. that led to a gunbattle that wounded the suspect is left an undercover narcotics officer dead. the officer was jakai coleson who was days shy of his 29th birthday. the motive is unclear. in texas a deadly officer involved shooting is under investigation. an off-duty officer came across a crime and intervened. the officer shot and killed one suspect and wounded another. police have not released the names nor have they said were crime was being committed. we have gray skies out there, somewhat fitting for the day after we switch to daylight saving time.

>> that is true. our daylight shift an hour. sunrise is one hour later in the morning and it sets one hour later in the evening. it has been a little bit gray out there this morning and we have cloud cover to deal with, too. let's take a look at the skycam shot as we look across wilson. we have had low cloud cover for wilson, and rocky mount but fog up toward the virginia line. temperatures certainly miles, 59 in roxboro where it has been foggy. 64 in benson and apex as well as garner, hope mills in clinton, 61 degrees in wake forest. we will deal with crowds until lunchtime and start to see them dissipating through the afternoon with a chance of a shower. then some potentl unrsrms. 72 degrees at lunchtime in downtown durham and 79 the high this afternoon. sunshine peeking through later on but after sunset we may have storms that role through which could be strong to severe.

in a few minutes. brian is talking about the accident on the wade avenue ramp. >> that ran from 40 westbound onto wade avenue remains blocked on the west side of raleigh and here are the 7:36 we are seeing growing delays heading away from us-1 toward wade avenue. people are getting out there expecting to take that ramp, and then they hit the brakes to slow down trying to figure out what to do next. the best thing to do is to avoid the area if you can. zoom in on the live commute map to give you an idea of the kind of delays we are seeing. right now the backups are beginning in advance of the us- 1 interchange for continue beyond wade avenue. as soon as you get beyond the closed ramp, a smooth drive out to the airport and rtp. getting there will be the problem. i want to note that because the traffic is backing up on 40 westbound at the us-1 interchange, we are starting to see delay building up on trent had heading into cary.

flooding has damaged thousands of homes in louisiana and mississippi. this is video of the devastation in particular, louisiana. -- at least four deaths have been reported including an elderly man. in mississippi, two fishermen have been missing for several days. another line of storms was expected to hit in louisiana, in addition to parts of oklahoma and arkansas. the man accused of hitting and killing several dogs competing in the iditarod race will face charges. arnold demosky was assaulted -- charged with assault and criminal hitting the dogs, he

heavy drinking when he admitted to killing the animals with his snowmobile. one team ushers says she used a wooden stick to fight off demosky, then demosky came across another sled team. that's when he ran over the animals, critically injuring several of them. demosky spoke to reporters saying he hopes the teams can forgive him. it is believed al qaeda operatives were behind a deadly shooting at an ivory coast beach resort. 16 people were killed when six gunmen opened fire. among the dead were 14 civilians in two government troops. security forces moved in to kill all six attackers a short time later. in brazil, some people want the president to leave office. they demanded their president resigned at the protesters are angry about an economic recession, and two corruption investigations. she has already said she is not going anywhere. the family of akiel denkins

shot him in the back, not the chest. lawyers for the family says their independent investigation shows discrepancies with information released by police. attorneys released findings during a weekend conference. the prelinary autopsy report says akiel denkins was shot four times in his right chest, left forearm and upper right arm and shoulder. attorneys for the family says the report is misleading. >> there were other shots. the only reason that it is appropriate from a legal point of view to share that now is because of the impression, the released by the state and the officer and prosecutor that have created an impression that there were shots from the front. >> the wake county district attorney, laura freeman, says additional findings by the state medical examiner are just one piece of the investigating puzzle. 7:43. a sci-fi thriller opened this weekend with favorable reviews.

weekend. or whatever you like. we do still have some pretty weather in the forecast for this week. today will be on the iffy side. we start off with our view of roxboro which has been foggy this morning. it is starting to lift a little bit, the visibility is tt than it was when we checked in one half hour ago on roxboro. i hate to pick on roxboro but it is really the only camera we have showing fog this morning. it is up near the virginia line even as we look toward rocky mount and wilson, no fog to be seen. everyone stuck under the clouds this morning. 64 the official temperature, dewpoint 63. lots of moisture and low cloud cover but the only real fog is from roxboro up to south hill. 56 in south hill, 67 erwin, 66 goldsboro, 67 southern pines, fayetteville and clinton. visibility still a quarter-mile in roxboro but up a little bit in south hill to 1 mile.

rocky mount -- fayetteville, just low cloud cover for the remaining area of the viewing area. this system comes moving into the mountains, it is a fast mover and had about will bring us a few scattered showers this afternoon. when the main event arrives that means a chance for thunderstorms. a few reports showing up on the map include wind damage at the airport from about 10:00 last night, and also some hail that was over in lewisburg at about 8:30. we had two rounds that came through, the evening ground and another that can through around midnight. a handful of reports of wind damage or hail. we will see a similar set up for today. 9:00, expect clouds to be fairly thick but after lunchtime we begin to see partly cloudy skies. back to the west, here is the system, ahead of it, a couple

a chance of thunderstorms after sunset. futurecast shows that closer to midnight but it could be any time. tuesday looks beautiful, increasing sunshine and another warm day tuesday. our temperatures this afternoon of course warming up to about elevated risk for severe weather from the triangle area westward, that is for a better chance of hail. we have a better chance of wind damage in the green areas where we have a marginal risk. looking at pretty weather tuesday and wednesday, warming up to 82 wednesday but 76 thursday. that is st. patrick's day. we have a front that comes through, it won't bring as much rain, just a few scattered showers. behind the clearing and turning cooler. saturday and sunday, clouds, low 60s saturday night into sunday. not as great of a weekend to spend outside. we have just learned some
