[ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah. that's how it's pronounced. >> and i actually do enjoy doing stand-up, especially now because, you know, life is so busy and it's so hectic. and with stand-up, i can just go out and relax and enjoy the silence. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: was it fun? >> it was really fun. i was really flattered at first, that jerry asked me to open the show for him. and then, i found out he considered it a double blind comedy test and i was the placebo.
12:01 am
>> jimmy: unbelievable. >> now, do you think that joke worked? [ light laughter ] let me ask the audience. if you thought it worked, applaud, i see that it didn't work. if you think it worked? [ applause ] how many thought it didn't work? [ light applause ] okay, well, i thought it didn't work, actually. but beforehand, i put responses in these envelopes for marty short and jerry and myself just to see, because we had, you know, it's a difficult joke. and here's -- i checked, of course, will work, otherwise i wouldn't do it. marty said, won't work. [ light laughter ] and let's see what jerry said. these are great comedy minds. complete disaster. sorry to monopolize. >> jimmy: no, no it was very -- it is fun to see that.

[ light laughter ] >> jimmy: you almost chose a a different career path.
12:15 am
>> well, that was what i thought i was going to be until i was 14 or 15. >> jimmy: really? >> from the age of nine i thought i would be a squash player. >> jimmy: was mom and dad into squash? >> no. we just, we ended up living in a place there were squash courts and, i had a talent for it. i never knew i would have a a talent for it. but i was good at it. my hand eye coordination is pretty good. and i practiced for hours and hours. and i was super, super fit as a a 9-year-old. i would be running two miles -- [ laughter ] no, yeah. i was. i was. >> jimmy: again, we're going to get to your -- >> there's just no proof. [ laughter ] >> okay. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: can you bring your 9-year-old self back on next time you're here? >> no, but i thought that's what i was going to do. >> jimmy: what made you stop? >> i fell out of love with it. i'm very grateful that i did. because then i joined the youth theater. i went on 15, local youth theater near london where i grew up. and thank god because my career would have been over as a
12:16 am
about 29, you know. and now here i am at 30, and i'm still working. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: exactly, yeah. well you're in this great new movie "whiskey tango foxtrot" with the great tina fey, our pal. >> the great tina fey, yeah. >> jimmy: and margot robbie. and this is based on the book. >> yes. written by kim barker. >> jimmy: kim barker. >> yes. >> jimmy: war journalist. >> yes. >> jimmy: and her, it's a best selling book. but this is -- you guys got good chemistry, you and tina fey. >> well, thanks. i had met her a couple of times before. >> jimmy: very difficult to work with. >> yeah. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: absolutely. almost impossible. >> she's a good actor, but a a terrible person. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: i've always said that. i've always said that. jinx. yeah. almost said it at the same time. yeah. >> it's hard to get both right. but she's very -- she's easy and i like her. >> jimmy: i've always said that, too. [ laughter ] i said that she's easy. [ applause ] since the first week i met her. >> yeah, yeah. i told that to everyone. >> by the way, if i can jump absolutely fantastic.
12:17 am
there you go. >> i have no -- well, i have a a little piece of it. [ laughter ] but it was fantastic and martin was incredible. >> thank you very much. >> jimmy: you are great in the film. >> have you seen it? >> jimmy: yes, absolutely. >> you're not just making that up? [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: my god. it's my job. i have to. yeah. >> you're not just saying it because he said it. >> jimmy: well -- >> partly. >> jimmy: partly. yeah. [ light laughter ] he didn't bring it up, i wasn't going to say anything. >> why wouldn't he? >> jimmy: he's the one that said he liked it. >> i haven't seen it. [ laughter ] [ applause ] >> jimmy: he gets me every time. [ laughter ] but we will. we're going to get around to it. wel'll get around to it. >> no, i have to. >> jimmy: is it hard to do dramatic with tina or -- because it's funny. >> yeah >> jimmy: and i know robert carlock wrote a -- yes. >> jimmy: -- who is funny, funny, funny guy. >> he is, yes. i mean, you know -- both of them were behind "30 rock" and "kimmy schmidt." you know. and their chemistry i think as writer and writer performer in this instance is brilliant. you know. they know each other very well. and they know what makes each other laugh and what works for
12:18 am
>> jimmy: you were saying backstage you had to do the most embrassing thing you ever had to do as a grown man. >> yeah. i'm not sure whether for anyone else it will translate. i was in the middle of the day having to sing a-ha's "take on me" in karaoke kind of drunk. and i'm playing serious glaswegian in this film. very, very, very scottish in this film. and so doing "take on me" pretending to be drunk in the middle of the day in front of a a lot of disinterested extras was very humiliating. [ light laughter ] and i'm not easily embarrassed. >> jimmy: yeah. >> and i was truly dying, dying inside. >> jimmy: why? >> i don't really know. like take four, i was just like looking around, people didn't really give a [ bleep ]. [ light laughter ] looked over at tina, she didn't give a [ bleep ] either. [ light laughter ] then fortunately, john and glenn, the directors were so positive. i think they saw that i was caving in. and i wanted to leave. >> jimmy: yeah. >> i wanted to sort of leave the arena. and they were like -- i went back to my trailer and they
12:19 am
set, you know. just as a kind of comradely gesture. >> jimmy: you're supposed to be drunk singing. so you don't have to sound good. >> no, i don't. but i think, i felt i wasn't acting good. and that said, you know, that was a different thing. >> jimmy: see, if edie had to do karaoke and she didn't sound good, that would be embarrassing. >> of course. >> jimmy: she's edie brickell. >> of course, of course. >> jimmy: but yeah, you are -- >> i'm certainly allowed to sing badly. >> jimmy: yeah. >> and i don't mind singing badly, but if you kind of, act in a way that you think is not great, that's not a good feeling. >> jimmy: yeah. well, acting drunk. i do it every night on the show. [ light laughter ] >> yeah, yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: worked for me. [ light laughter ] i want to show everyone a clip of the movie. here is you and tina fey. this is you have kind of a a drunken night together. >> kissy time. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, kissy time. that was the original title of the film. >> it was. kissy time. we agonized over that. >> jimmy: and you changed it to "whiskey tango foxtrot." >> mistake. >> jimmy: but it was "kissy time." anyways, here's martin freeman

[ laughter ] according to the new cnn national poll, donald trump has increased his lead among the republican field and is now up to 49% support. but remember, it's a cnn poll so 49% is also the margin of error. [ laughter ] donald trump recently said that backstage at the debates it looks like marco rubio applies his make up with a trowel which is surprising critique from a man who applies his makeup by standing outside the cheetos factory and waiting for an explosion.
