hello again. i'm jessica kartalija. don is off today. here's what people are talk ing about. breaking news. the best selling author and a baltimore native tom clancy has died. mary is live in the news room with more. >> reporter: well, tom clancy who was born and lived in baltimore died after a brief illness at johns hopkins. he wrote the hunt for red october and patriots game. he attended loyola college. before making his literary debut he spent time selling insurance. he was a minority owner of the orioles. tom clancy is one of only three authors to have sold 2 million copies on the first printing. tom clancy was 66 years old. jessica back to you. >> thank you. more on his death and life coming you up on

wjz at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. day 2 of the u.s. government shutdown and lawmakers are still trying to find a solution. tara mergener reports from washington. >> there's no sign of compromise on capitol hill. plenty of finger pointing though. >> republicans in the house have proposed one can't pass idea after another the last few days. >> in the end they got their shut down, which they apparently think will help them politically. >> house republicans are pushing a plan to fund parts of the government, including national parks and veterans affairs. democrats call it a publicity stunt and insist on a bill that fully funds the government without stringing attached. >> the new health care law remains at the center of the controversy. republicans want to defund or delay it, democrats and president obama refuse to allow it to be linked to a temporary spending bill. >> the impact of the partial

government shutdown is setting in here in maryland. protestors gathered tuesday in perryville. >> this is not how you run a country. that's what they're in there for. >> workers are feeling the impact at the social security administration, nasa, fort mchenry, fort meade, even the naval academy. this weekend's air force and navy game also in compromise. >> there's a lot of different things. this is a big game not only for us but for the city. >> they're bringing guys from walter reed up to see the game and take advantage of the big hoopla. >> many area businesses like fudo rely on those football fans and no game means no business. >> if the game doesn't happen

i'm going to have a sad saturday. >> and stay with wjz for complete coverage of the government shutdown. the latest on the negotiations and impacts. there's one winning ticket in the $189 million mega millions jackpot and it was sold in anne arundel county. ron just got back from the store where the winning ticket was purchased. he's live with the latest. >> reporter: hi, jessica. a lot of excitement on quarterfield road. we don't know who holds the winning ticket. we no e -- we know the owner of the store has hit it big. >> the big ticket was sold here at the dash in on quarterfield road in severn. it's breaking news here. store owner is feeling the excitement. >> i am so happy right now. i got the phone call from the lottery and they said somebody hit the ticket from my store at quarterfield dash in. i was so excited to see who hit the

here in maryland this year. a mount erie woman claimed a $26 million jackpot in february. people who live near marly creek in anne arundel county are being warned to stay away from that creek. this after a large sewage spill there. a temporary pumping station failed sending 50,000 gallons of untreated sewage into the water. a temporary pump is being used while repairs are made. the calendar says october. feels more like summer out there. wjz saw a huge increase in the number of people outside exercising and some just taking in the rays. outside right now temperatures are climbing with lots of sunshine and clear skies out there. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. chelsea ingram is joining us. >> hello, everyone. it doesn't feel like october but it does look like october. i saw the leaves starting to fall. is it going to feel like august as we head into this afternoon. we

motorcycle mayhem in manhattan. a man driving with his wife and 2-year-old daughter were surrounded by bikers. while trying to get away he runs over a rider who is in critical condition. the driver of the suv has not been charged. we have breaking news. just minutes ago a pennsylvania court denies the appeal for former penn state code jerry sandusky. a three judge panel ruled jerry sandusky doesn't deserve a new trial. sandusky said his lawyers didn't have enough time to prepare for trial, the judge mishandled jury instructions. he's serving a 30 to 60-year prison sentence. one person is arrested after a frightening evacuation at florida's jacksonville international airport. the airport is up and running today after two suspicious packages,

one described as destructive, forced an evacuation for nearly 5 hours. the suspect said he had a bomb. he's now being held without bond on charges of making a false report about an explosive. no flights were allowed to take off during the evacuation. a violent crash. takoma public schools are investigating a bus driver after she's involved in a frightening chain reaction accident. >> [screaming] >> video from inside the two buses shows just how scary it was. the bus driver hit a pick up and another bus before coming to a stop. the female driver was ticketed for negligent driving. northern lights dance across the nights sky. they put on a stunning show with their bright

welcome back. a beautiful day out there on this october 2nd. the wasp still flying around the camera there. temperatures in the 80s in central maryland. 80 degrees in baltimore. those temperatures are only going to rise into the afternoon. we might reach that record in the inner harbor of 89 degrees. we will have to see. temperatures from the upper 7 p 0s in annapolis to 80 degrees at westminster, columbia and bwi. winds coming out of the west. that's helping to pull in that heat located towards our west. some breezes out there too. dc winds around 13 miles per hour. the big picture though is showing high and dry conditions. we're all in the same boat along the atlantic sea board. dry conditions. that's going to be the case all through friday. we'll get a little bit of cloud cover and then into the weekend we will see mostly dry conditions. here's how things

are going to play out through your friday. a system start to approach onto our doorstep. it's not going to quite make it over the mountains. then we will see a cold front head our way sunday night into monday. that in connection with a coastal system will bring us a little bit of rainfall. tropical storm jerry still in the atlantic. the middle taking -- model taking it way out of the way. we'll be paying attention to the gulf to bring us rainfall. there's the spaghetti models for jerry still spinning out into the atlantic. here's what you can expect for the rest of today. highs in the mid 80s. we're going to be most ly sunny out there. 57 over night, partly cloudy skies. as we move into your thursday, warm with a mix of clouds and sun. still not feeling quite like october.
