4:00 pm
you can see there on the map state of emergency has already been declared and at least six states. so how will the storm of course effect us here in new england. jeremy riper has been tracking it all day long. he has the latest right now. jr? this is brand new. we've up dayed our winter storm watch to a winter storm warning. also of note is now a blizzard warning in effect for only martha's vineyard. it's not in effect for the cape, south coast. not even in effect for nantucket nantucket. what also stands out, there are no watches or warning or even advisories for the city of boston. so there are no changes to the snowfall forecast for metro boston. now again rehashing what a blizzard warning means, it does not mean the amount of snow on the way it, just means for three or four hours, three or more hours, you may have vice the reduced to a quarter mile or less. i think the reason that's not in effect for nantucket is because you will have rain mixing in with the snow and so your advic advicibility won't be reduced like it will on martha's vineyard.
4:01 pm
here. this is a powerhouse storm. no changes there. no real major changes to the track. i know the blizzard warning comes out at you and says what is going on? i don't think so. i'm going to hold firm here of high pressure is still going to do a great job of predeveloping most of the storm from passing south of new england. we've been talking about the whole week how new would be on northern edge storm system. that's still the case and with that northern edge there will be a drastic change in snowfall totals meaning from south to north going from a lot to hardly anything. so your storm time line midday tomorrow, that's what will seem patchy snow break out around the metro. steadier snow along the south coast and cape and that doesn't change much for the entire event of we hold on to the patchy, light snow but the steadiest snow confined to the south coast as well as the cape and islands and so because of that, that is where you find most of the snow. so your snowfall forecast metro boston one, maybe three inches of snow on the south shore. you come down the south shore to
4:02 pm
numbers are six or seven inches of snow and you get down into buzzard's bay six to ten inches likely. here is a closer look north of the pike a coating to an inch but most of the snow will be confined to along and south of route 44 right at the water's edge in particular. six to ten inches out on to the cape as well as the islands. martha's vineyard and nantucket. now for more on the wind and threat for coastal flooding here is bri eggers . pretty impressive with this storm and to reiterate what you said there is a sharp dropoff so where the bull's iis we stay not of that. as you can see, snow showers and steady snow showers at that already working into the nation nation's capitol and we will not see those snow showers stop until we head into the wee hours of sunday morning. so this is quite a bit of snow. again, headed into the dc area, two feet could even be plus and their number one storm snowfall for washington, d.c., 28 inches, so this could top the list at the top two if not to become number one. blizzard warning in effect as we
4:03 pm
stretches all the way up to long island an as jr mentioned also includes martha's vineyard. now as we work through the storm time line again i mentioned that we won't see the storm's snowfall shut off until we hit wee hours of sunday morning and we just sort of get the northern grazing of this storm, the bull bull's eye certainly in the mid-atlantic states and the wind will be putting out of northeast best case scenario is that we do see just minor pockets maybe moderate pockets of coastal flooding for the south shore, south coast and also for cape cod. we'll get more details on that coming up in just a few minutes . >> anchor: the east coast is bracing for impact. in west rare rare people already slipping and sliding on the row. you can see there the snow start starting to come down and starting to accumulate. some 75 million people are in the storm's path. 30 million of them facing the blizzard conditions there. adam williams has been tracking this too with some video and he has conditions around the country. adam? six states have declared a state of emergency. leaders taking no chances with the storm.
4:04 pm
dealing with slippery conditions as you see in this video getting uphills, proving to be one of the more challenging issues for drivers there. you can see some areas people got out of their cars to help each other out and push. a pickup truck even towed a tractor trailer in several other was to get them through a tough spot. police there responded to more than 150 crashes during the morning commute alone. snow and freezing rain moved into parts of north carolina this morning. some video from there. students getting a rare snow day as well as several city and state workers whose offices happen to be closed today. you can see some drone video that we have. i think this is it giving us a bird's eye view of the city and the skyline covered in white. hundreds of flights into and out of charlotte airport have also been canceled. the in addition's capitol right in the bull's eye of this storm as jeremy and bree were talking about earlier. this week just a light dusting of snow left the roads there a total mess. dc's mayor says the city is working non-stop though to keep everyone as safe as possible,
4:05 pm
help them out. we see this as a major storm. it has life and death implications and all the residents of the district of columbia should treat it that way. we want people to hunker down, the roads. >> anchor: a record breaking storm dropped 2028 inches of snow on washington but that was back in 1922. that record. in our newsroom, adam william, 7 news . >> anchor: thank you, adam. of course this weather is causing a lot of travel woes. airlines canceling flights up and down the east coast. that has last a whole lot of people's weekend plans up in the air. there will be no planes in or out of philadelphia's airport at all on saturday. jonathan hall joins us now live from logan airport where passengers are even scrambling there. jonathan? yeah, nearly 3,000 u.s. flights have been canceled coast
4:06 pm
site flight aware. that includes 117 flights coming in and out of logan. a welcome sight in january, logan airport free and clear as the big jets come and go . i was worried, but it was fine. no problems at all . >> anchor: but there are big problems further south flits to and from washington, d.c., richmond, raleigh and charlotte all canceled. that airport in north car loona looks like a ghost town. these pats fans living in tampa flew in to watch the afc championship with family and friends . going through charlotte you would have had trouble. we were looking at that and luck iwe went through atlanta . >> anchor: these people waiting to pick up baggage told me they are pretty sure they got the last flights out of philadelphia and la guardia in new jersey . it looked like they were canceling flights today so anyone who is still down there has to wait for a couple. you just made it out . >> anchor: i did, yeah. it feels great . and boston's major in dc yesterday for the us conference
4:07 pm
storm. i feel booed. i'm leaving tonight and i will hopefully watch on tv and look out the window and see it . and coming up at 5:00 we'll tell you more about boston's two brand new mega snow blowers. this i have not even been used here yet. they might get used in wash war dc first. live at logan, jonathan hall, 7 news thank you for that, jonathan. as the storm gets closer you can get the updated track on and on the 7 news mobile and tablet apps . all right, it's off to colorado for the patriots as they head to denver to take on the broncos in the afc championship game today. the team left by bus of then board a plane to denver in rhode island. they will have a day to rest up . patriots also getting some good news with two key players back in the lineup for this big game. our team coverage begins right now with 7's alex corddry live for us at foxboro.
4:08 pm
hey, well, as we know the patriots always embody that next man up mantra, but this season maybe more than ever we saw injuries become a tipping point and two players that were tough to replace, dante hightower and julian edelman. two months after breaking his left foot against the giants, julian picked up where he left off snagging ten passes for 100 yards . i've always been a big practice guy. whether it was bail, catching ground balls, hitting, swigging as many times as you can until you feel look you mastered it then do more. that's what i have to do . >> reporter: with him back in the lineup it's not coincidence things looked like old times against the chiefs. in the games edelman has played, tom brady has more touchdown passes than any other quarterback in the nfl. the best passor ratting and the pats have been number two in third down conversion.
4:09 pm
from satisfied, saying he was miscues last week there is plenty of situation that's we didn't click and there are plenty of balls that i didn't get to bring in so there is always something to work for and you can always be better . >> anchor: pats defense will have to be better if they are going to survive beyond this weekend. the chiefs rush for 135 yards by taking advantage when can'ta hightower was forced out of the game because of injuries. hightower's impact on the run . that's the one thing i take pride in is being aggressive downhill run stopper and that's what i do. that's what i take pride in so it means a lot to me. >> reporter: so hightower just mitting a couple snaps in that chiefs game but certainly not having him there that was felt and also fellow linebacker jamie collins did not finish the game in the second half. he was taken out because of an injury. he did practice this week but there certainly is some concern
4:10 pm
live in foxboro, alex corddry, 7 news. >> anchor: thanks so much. the patriots getting a warm send sendoff from their fans today at gillette wishing the team good luck as they head off to denver. 7's byron barnett is live in foxboro with more on that send sendoff. byron . absolutely definitely a very warm sendoff on an absolutely cold day but loyal pats fans were out here today cheering their team on to victory. . we want to send them off and say we're still with you. fans are with you. do your job. woo! p new england patriots fans stood in the subfreezing temperature as their team left gillette stadium heading off to face the denver broncos in another epic show down for the a . we want to send them off. they need to just ignore the noise out there and know that we are at home cheering for them .
4:11 pm
used to home field advantage admit they would rather be playing at gillette but they are confident the pats can beat the broncos anywhere . i would is liked to have it here because the comfort of home for the players, a lot easier to prepare but it doesn't matter. we're on a mission. drive for five, baby . what message to pats fans have for the broncos? same as them. they are donkeys. we'll beat them and come into their territory. >> reporter: those fans say they are confident of a win and they say they expect to be back here again to send the team off to another super bowl. that's the story live at gillette stadium, i'm byron barnett, 7 news . >> anchor: so the question remains, who will be on the cover of all the newspapers come monday morning? of course pats nation hoping it will be a new england star. dan hausle joins us now live with more on some fan prediction predictions. well, bill belichick always preaches that everybody has to step up in a big game like this one.
4:12 pm
going to be someone who is not the big names here, who would it be? we asked them to look florida a crystal ball. if it's not biddy or gronk, fans next best guess is a pats running back . we're going to need a little out of james white. the running game has been slow. they will defend gronk, eelman, a great defense, white has to catch them up with a few free plays . >> reporter: our backs are pivotal moving the ball and brady looks to check down to them a lot so i think you can see some big plays out of him . with some predicting the game could come down a field goal that would point to just one man. gostkowski the kicker. he can make or break the game . >> reporter: the unlikely hero of last year's super bowl was a defensive player, malcom butler with that big interception and some fans say defense could make the difference again . they will try to run it up the middle like seattle should have and there will be a big old
4:13 pm
. >> anchor: so remember some of those names that pat fans truly don't care who is the hero as long as the pats walk out of denver with a win. live in foxboro, dan hausle, 7 news . >> anchor: be sure to stay with 7 news for continuing coverage live if denver. tre and joe will be live in colorado all throughout the weekend for you . >> anchor: we are following some breaking news right now. the oscars pledging to make changes in the wake of controversy. the film academy says it will double the number of female and minority members by the year 20 2020. there has been widespread criticism all week-long for the exclusion of african-american being stores from nominations for the second year in a row. three new seats have also been added to the board of governors . >> anchor: ahead on 7 news, taking a plunge. a driver losing control in an su suv and it ends up inside an in indoor pool in dame bridge p . >> anchor: a race to the rescue rescue. crews rushing to bring it to safety . at 4:30 a bearded bet.
4:14 pm
as we wait for the outcome of the brady manning matchup . >> anchor: the storm bears down on the east coast, the in addition's capitol bearing the brunt. the white house covered as snow is really taking over there. we'll continue to track the afternoon of the we'll be right marco rubio. he ran for senate saying he opposed amnesty... then he flipped, and worked with liberal chuck schumer to co-author the path to citizenship bill. he threatened to vote against it. and then voted for it. he supported his own dream act and then he abandoned it. marco rubio. just another washington politician you can't trust. jeb bush. he's a leader, so you always know where he stands. right to rise usa

cambridge after he loses control of an suv. that car taking a plunge right into an indoor pool . >> anchor: pretty incredible damage here. steve cooper has more from cambridge. petraeus it's pretty surprising . >> reporter: take a look at these dramatic images after an s suv with the windshield wiper still swigging back and forth ends up on its side in an indoor swimming pool in this cambridge high-rise near the museum of science . this is a first car into a pool. right in the middle of winter too, you know . cambridge fire officials tell us it happened late thursday night when a valet here at 12 museum way accidently accelerated instead of breaking sending the crashing through a window and wall before landing in the pool . it did wake us up. we were in about an hour before that. >> reporter: the driver somehow was able to shimmy himself out of the wreckage before he was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries .
4:18 pm
they said minor injuries. hopefully he is okay. >> reporter: as clean run gets under way, residents are just thankful no one was seriously hut here but at the same time anxious for the pool to be . i just hope it doesn't take pool and gym . get it boarded up, get it cleaned up, get the car out of there and that's it. get it become to normal as quick as possible. >> reporter: as crews work to pump out the 22000 gas of water from the pool it looks like a car mat may have gotten stuck near the gas pedal causing this whole mess but the investigation is ongoing. in cambridge, massachusetts, steve cooper, 7 news. >> anchor: a suspect arrested in roxbury after police say he barricaded himself ined so a hoe hoe. a swat team and hostage negotiators responded to the scene on hutch inson street. witnesses told police the man had a gun and took a woman inside with him. negotiators were eventually able to talk the suspect out of the part apartment. the police commissioner said he is thankful no one was hurt . thank god there was no female in the apartment injured
4:19 pm
taken into custody. so the textbook as far as negotiation and slowing down the incident and bringing the suspect out. police will now be executing a warrant to get into that home to see if the suspect did have a weapon. >> anchor: blizzard warning martha's vineyard no, watches or warnings city of boston. . at 4:30 if you wanted tickets to see the piano man live you may be out of luck . >> anchor: ahead at five:00 a violent attack on uber driver all caught on camera and now this woman's job may be in jeopardy. >> anchor: we're staying on top of the progress of the winter storm as it bears down on our nation's capitol. we have a live report from washington, d.c. where you get a

rescue after two deer fell through the ice on a cranberry bog in plympton. the deer were successfully saved by using a catch pole. officials believe that the animals had been in the water since early this morning. unbelievable. they survived, great job there. >> anchor: we do have a blues art warning in effect for only martha's vineyard. this is just special for you, nantucket winter storm warning as well as the cape, the south coast, portions of the south shore you notice the purple here that is a winter weather advisor advisory and you move even farther north and there are no advisories, watches or warnings posted for the city of boston or worcester or nashua. it's that drastic of a cutoff of the amount of snow. now blizzard warning for and a halfman again it does not mean the amount of snow on the way. it means reduced visibility for three or more hours down to a quarter mile. winds at 35 miles per hour or
4:21 pm
so the weather service things that is something that is definitely possible with this storm. here is the storm system right now moving through the southeast pummeling portions of north carolina with ice and snow and sleet farther north metro dc as well as baltimore, heavy snow and this tries to move north up into new england but high pressure is not bulging and so that is still going to squeeze most of the storm south of the new england but like we have been saying for a few days now we are right out of northern edge of this storm system and again you go a few miles in either direction it will determine how much snow or no snow you pick up. your storm time line tomorrow you are fine in the morning hours, 1:00 tomorrow afternoon, patches of light snow around metro boston, steadier snow comes out of narragansett bay as well as buzzard's bay andesty much hangs out on the south coast as well as the cape for the entire event. here we are at 7:00 tomorrow night. still around the metro pockets of light snow. it will be similar to what we monday morning. at no time is the storm
4:22 pm
that has not changed. the change will be martha's vineyard getting the blizzard warning of course in effect, but nothing significant around the metro martha's vineyard though where where you have wind and snow working against you. 7:00 sunday morning show is over over. partly sunny skies in the city with some lingering flurries on the cape. so traveling tomorrow again the first pat of the day you are fine and then as we work through the afternoon this would take into account for most of us around the metro area. you head farther south though. the south coast, the south shore toward plymouth and out on to the cape. there will be poor travel with the snow and the wind especially plymouth over toward new bedford fall river south, that's where have you the highest snow totals totals. 320 six inches of snow along route 44. metro boston one oh three inches of snow. nothing overwhelming and did you even farther north and west. nashua, amesbury, clouds. that's it. 7 on 7 forecast sunday morning clouds, sun in the afternoon. windy on sunday morning. that wind will simmer down by sunday afternoon. mid 30's. see you at 4:30 . >> anchor: thanks so much.
4:23 pm
let's get a check of the friday drive home . a slow ride right now southbound and northbound on the expressway. the headlights are trying to make your way down toward andrew square. had an earlier left lane crash just cleared away for us dealing with a backup here as we roll back toward our other camera you can see those brake lights heading southbound down toward andrew square. the headlights coming into town perhaps in the late shift as well jammed up pretty heavy here from columbia road right through the o'neill tunnel. making your way along 93 northbound in town. this is the zakim bridge traffic leading away heading northbound and it stays heavy up into the medford area. after that spot though we're not moving all that badly along route 93. once you get up through somerville section it moves well well. route 3 on the breaks a bit here in the burlington area an 128 northbound so some pockets of traffic heading up as well. joe stain eton, 7 news . >> anchor: coming up next on 7 news school officials in worcester working to try and shut down a facebook fight club involving students . >> anchor: ahead on 7 news,
