>> still searching the coast guard has recovered three empty life rafts but there is no sign of 12 missing marines including one from chester county. >> hollywood controversy. with the oscars a few weeks away the buzz is about who is not nominated. the response from the academy. it's 6:00 a.m. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm vai sikahema. we issue add first alert because of how bitter told and windy it is. count on nbc 10 to help you prepare. matt delucia is outside in the bitter cold this morning and first alert meteorologist bill henley is in the studio tracking not only this morning's cold but what's coming later in the week as well. >> there is a lot going on. we'll see a storm at the end of the week. today we have to deal with the cold which means layering u. significantly colder this morning. bitter winds are blowing, we've seen gusts of 30 miles an hour in the region, makes it feel like it's right around zero,

some spots below zero this morning. very cold morning, the wind is still steady it's at 15 miles an hour northeast philadelphia, 17-mile-an-hour wind in wilmington. that's just enough to make it feel like 1 degree in northeast philadelphia. 1 degree below zero in wilmington, also feels like it's below zero for pottstown and reading and lube at the mountains, 15 degrees below. that shaking camera, that's the gusty wind. 17 degrees at 8:00, bright sunshine, we'll see a slow warm-up. by 11:00, 22 degrees. you see the winds even a little bit stronger at 11:00 up to 20 miles an hour at 2:00 this afternoon with the readings still in the 20s. very cold morning. we'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in 10 minutes. matt delucia is in the cold. people got to be rushing to get in the train this morning. >> reporter: absolutely, bill. and a lot of them are waiting inside as opposed to outside and when you're outside you have to

have all of the layers on and thank to tracy davidson for the hand warmers they are coming in handy. look at these folks, a couple of braving the elements staying outside, it's definitely in the teens out here but it feels a lot colder when you factor in the wind. we got a breeze out here at the moment. it's a cold couple of days, last night check out not much better. people catching the bus and eager to hop on board and get out of the cold weather. and since we're under 20 degrees a code blue for many boosting efforts to help the homeless. a lot of people are gearing up for the possible storm at the end of the week getting salt and de-icing fluid. i spoke with somebody waiting for this train now. she says that it's really just all about getting inside as quickly as possible. take a listen. >> i'll try my best to put on so many layers i'm wearing thermal on the top and bottom. and i'm wearing a scarf and a thick sweater.

you need to the tap the brakes. into new jersey a look at the 42 freeway drive times about five minutes north between route 55 and the walt whitman bridge. the same southbound, and the area bridges are free and clear of issues as well. >> thank you, katy. new information on the search for 12 marines who disappeared after a helicopter crash off the north shore of hawaii. search crews say they found life rafts from two marine helicopters that collided last week. they said some of the rafts were inflated. the coast guard found scattered debris. two marines from pennsylvania were on board the aircraft including captain bryant kennedy of malvern, chester county. >> 17 degrees, wind chills much colder. we're learning about a man who turned himself in for a shooting a it a homeless shelter. he has been arraigned and charged with murder. john brock turned himself in to police last night accused of shooting two employees a it a

north philadelphia homeless shelter. investigators say brock opened fire sunday morning after he had been previously evicted from the station house shelter. ed barksdale died. lamont barham is in stable condition. barham's father told what his son told him about the shooting. >> they had the door open for the workers to come in and he came in and just started, wasn't nothing said, started shooting. >> barham's father said his son is expected to make a full recovery. the suspect remains in jail after being denied bail. a man accused of pushing a woman on the septa tracks is behind bars. philadelphia police say kenneth grimes came up behind a woman sunday morning while she was standing on the platform at 30th street station and pushed her. she fell on the tracks and had cuts and scrapes.

eight minutes after 6:00. it's a cold start. we have issued a first alert for bitter cold, feeling colder by the gusty winds. wind chills running below zero in parts of the area. cold today, it's this weekend that we'll see the first big storm of the season. tracking the potential for heavy snow later friday and saturday. this morning, this is what we have to deal with, 5 degrees a it the pocono mountains, 15 in trenton and wilmington and the gusty wind into that and it feels colder. the wind is shaking the camera on top of the mellon bank building. third-mile-an-hour wind gusts in northeast philadelphia and close to that in the pocono mountains so the wind chill readings right at 3 degrees for philadelphia but feels like it's below zero in wilmington, reading, pottstown, lancaster and 15 below for the pocono mountains. we'll see sunshine but short of freezing during the day. bright sunshine today, clouds

for the weekend, those will bring us snow. but today your hour by hour future wind chills showing 5 degrees, that's at 10:00 this morning and not a lot warmer at noon time. it will feel like 9 degrees in philadelphia. so a blustery day ahead. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast 21 this afternoon, the high temperature for camelback, gusty winds for souderton and bordentown at the shore 20s today from ventnor city to cape may, 27 degrees and 29 in symrna. you'll see sunshine, bright but the winds still gusty for newark, woodstown and philadelphia, upper 20s today. dry today but that changes, we head into the weekend. i've got a look at the weekend storm on the seven-day when i'm back in 10 minutes. >> about 6:10. like getting hand signal this is is the vine street expressway. see how clever that is. >> katy zachry has a look at the

vine. >> right. you and i can do that too. the vine is looking pretty good. average speeds now in the 50s and we've had good luck on the vine throughout the morning because unlike most mornings there was no overnight construction blocking both east and westbound lanes. so everything is looking good on the vine if you're making your drive between 95 and the schuylkill expressway. speaking of those majors in pennsylvania, here is a look at your drive times, the schuylkill expressway eastbound to center city philadelphia, between if blue route and the vine about 13 minutes, 95 southbound, this is crept up about eight minutes in the last 5 minutes. so you're dealing with an average speed now in the low 30s, it's going to take about a half hour southbound between woodhaven and the vine. the blue route is looking good as it usually is at this time. we'll see traffic pick up. delaware drivers around the wilmington area on 95 northbound, between 295 and 495, that's going to take you about 10, 11 minutes the same in the opposite direction.

>> in this video message on facebook jada pinkett smith said she will not attend or watch the oscars. her husband was not nominated for his performance in the head trauma drama "concussion." spike lee says he is skipping the awards, the second year the academy has nominated all white actors. the academy president issued a statement saying in part she is heartbroken and frustrated by the lack of influence and in the coming weeks the academy will conduct a review in order to bring much needed diversity. the qui remaining what will this year's host do. he used humor but will the swell of criticism pressure him to make a choice. we'll have a lot more coming up at 7:00. >> super bowl less than a month away, the fbi and the homeland security department are concerned that recent vandalism in california could be part of a complex plot against the game.

more than a dozen incidents cables were severed. super bowl 50 will be held february 7. it's one of several risks detailed. that memo details a threat from drones and potential game day attacks and crowded spaces. >> the long holiday weekend appeared to have worked wonders for ski areas needing a business boost after warm start to the winter. spring mountain ski area nouf has most of its trails open. a slow start to the season, a quarter million dollars, the owner told us that the dusting of snow on sunday brought out the skiers. >> we don't pay bills is what it amounts to. our week between christmas and new year's is our busiest week so we missed that. >> he hopes the snow forecast for this weekend packs the slopes.

>> 18 minutes after 6:00. we issued a first alert for wind and cold and gusty wind wloing through the area. 17 degrees in philadelphia, you'll feel the cold through the morning. we'll see bright sunshine, and it's completely dry. that will not change this afternoon. our skies will stay clear but the winds will be gusty even into this afternoon. the temperatures without the wind are cold. 15 in wilmington and trenton. doylestown at 12, 13 in pottstown now. and chester county it's 13 for westchester and in phoenixville 14 degrees. chester springs is at 13 and the wind is making it feel like it's below zero in much of the area. satellite, a few thin clouds northwest, we'll see plenty of sunshine today. and warmer weather over the next couple days. but toward the weekend the storm that is moving onto the west coast is our snowmaker for later

friday and saturday. it's moving through california, into utah and colorado, then it looks like it fizzles. watch over kansas, that spinning is the beginning of the storm coming together. it taps into the gulf and starts coming our way. we'll be dry friday morning but you can see the rain in tennessee and alabama. that will be arriving here into the colder air and it will be a big snow generator. we issued a first alert as the storm develops late friday, stays with us saturday. many areas seeing a snowstorm, nor'easter conditions at the shore. today sunshine, you need your sunglasses, you need to layer up. brutally cold this morning and gusty winds will keep it cold. high temperatures in the middle to upper 20s today it will feel like the teens. then the wind dies down, cold tomorrow morning, and 37 degrees, a nice warm-up for wednesday and bright sunny skies on thursday. 37 degrees. the clouds return on friday

after a dry morning, snow will develop later on friday. accumulating snow friday night and potentially all day on saturday for much of the area. finally ending saturday night and clearing out on sunday. a little bit warmer on monday. >> the timing sort of have down, it's the amount. >> there is a little issue on the timing whether it gets here friday night or really starts to get going saturday morning. there are those questions still to be answered. how much snow in what areas. the most looks like it's going to be to our west. but that could still bring us significant snowfall during the day on saturday for much of our viewing area. >> we have a viewer tom e-mails me. he is from north dakota. it's 47 below in williston. it's relative. >> he lives in north dakota? >> he is here. >> smart man. welcome to the warm weather.

>> exactly. >> check in now on traffic. a couple of crashes on 95. >> katy zachry has that. >> yes, two major crashes in minutes of each other. we're going to start with the first, 95, a look actually at academy road. the crash is at cottman avenue. so you can see all of the backup as a result of that crash at 95 southbound right at cottman avenue. this is a live look at 95. if you are headed southbound between woodhaven and the vine, expect delays on this stretch. 95 south of the city this is right near the exit for 476 northbound. it's a parking lot. that's because this crash happened about the last 15 minutes ago. multi-cars involved in both crashes, there are some lane closures. i'll let you know because we're seeing drive times creeping up. 95 southbound between woodhaven and the vine this should be in

philadelphia, in the teens for wilmington. roxborough in south philadelphia down to 14 degrees. the wind making it feel colder. 1 below is the wind chill now in wilmington. pottstown is also at 1 below and below zero for reading and in lancaster. it really feels bitter cold in the pocono mountains. 16 below is the wind chill there. we'll see sunshine, look how clear it is. from the nbc 10 studios, look at the wind too, 16 miles an hour and hanging in there at 11 and getting stronger at 2:00. in the 20s by 11, 27 degrees will be about as warm as it gets during the day. i'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i come back in 10 minutes. >> because of the cold temperatures, we've been telling you at the bus stop waiting for a train headed out layer up. let's check in with matt delucia. he is live in ambler. >> matt, your photographer, is

he out running camera or locked down and next to you? >> no, he tried to pull that. i sent him back outside. he's right there manning the camera. of course this is what we've got to do. we've been out since 3:30 at the train station in ambler. and it is very cold. limit your time outside so i figured what am i doing, it occurred to me get inside the truck so here i am. so it's very cold, we have seen people bundled up. look at some video. last night we caught some people trying to catch the bus or the train really just trying to limit their time outside. and really get out of the cold weather. especially when you're waiting for the train at the suburban area stations a lot of people we found are gearing up for the possible storm that bill's been talking about that we could get at the end of the week. they have been getting salt and de-icing fluid. one guy i spoke with is from the northwest part of the country and he says that this whole

you need including updated forecasts, severe weather alerts, interactive radar and of course school closing information. >> it's 6:36. breaking traffic news. two multi-vehicle accidents on 95. >> nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter katy zachry has all of the information about that. >> we have the accidents and our cameras, i'm seeing lane restrictions there. the good news is this accident that i brought up you can see the scene here, this is 95 southbound just north of the exit for 476. you can see traffic here is moving off, headed on 476 northbound between exit 8 and 7 consecutively if you head down south on 95. so the good news is traffic is getting by. some of the lane restrictions have cleared. expect delays on 95 southbound as you make your way toward this scene at 476. there is another scene we showed you that's near cottman avenue. that is the accounting for this delay. so if you're headed between

woodhaven and the vine southbound on 95 about 45 minutes again multi-vehicle crash at cottman avenue. we're seeing lane restrictions there and you have a 45-minute drive time to go that stretch. 76, seeing delays because of volume as you head east into center city philadelphia and the blue route southbound between the schuylkill and 95 everything is looking good. moving into new jersey, no major problems, traffic is running smoothly on 295, right at route 70, this is in cherry hill. mass transit things have slowed on septa's line so i'll have those tee tails cdetails coming. >> eagles will introduce doug pederson as the new head coach. philip seymour hoffman pederson theft kansas city chiefs and flew to philly. we were there. and will be there for the formal announcement. drew smith is live at lincoln financial field.

he's got his work cut out for him. >> reporter: yeah, there are high expectations here and there will be a lot of cameras here in south philadelphia all of them pointed at doug pederson. you can see the organization is ready for the change. they have the banner up ready to welcome him to town. pederson recently served as offensive coordinator in kansas city as you said vai but he was a former quarterback here in philadelphia and worked as a quarterback coach for the eagles too. so he's familiar with the leadership, knows the fans and those fans are ready for a new season and saturday. already people want to know who will he surround himself with on this staff. former lions defensive coordinator jim schwartz was spotted in town. >> happy to see that it's better than chip kelly. >> they need a new coach. >> easy as that. >> right. >> if you want to hear directly from the coach we'll carry the news conference in its entirety

philadelphia on friday to kick off the cancer initiative at penn medicine's cancer center. >> today temple university could take the next step toward building its own football stadium. reports the school's board of trustees will vote on setting aside money for a stadium architect planning to build a stadium for estimated $100 million. they play at the linc. 20 minutes before 7:00. it's a bitter cold morning. we issued a first alert morning. it feels like it's near zero. some spots below zero for the wind chills. tracking the potential of our first major storm, heavy snowfall for much of the northeast coming in this weekend. 14 now in allentown. right in the middle teens for northeast philadelphia and atlantic city. skies are clear, we'll see a lot of sunshine but don't look for a quick warm-up. it's going to be held back, the

temperatures by the gusty winds, gusting to 29 miles per hour. 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts in northeast philadelphia. and that is giving us temperatures in the teens but wind chills below zero is what it feels like. 1 below in reading and pottstown and wilmington, 4 degrees below zero in lancaster and while it's 3 degrees, what it feels like the temperature is 17. that's to start with. the wind will be blowing all day, see how clear it is. so as cold as it is, the temperature will climb to near freezing this afternoon. the wind chills, though, they stay with us, a 5 degree wind chill that's at 10:00 and not much warmer at noon time it it will feel like we're in the single digits at lunch time. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast upper 20s for allentown, reading and quakertown. gusty all day long for norristown, mount holly and trenton. sunshine at the shore, the temperatures will climb for atlantic city, cape may and

dover but gusty winds make it feel like the teens across the board for wilmington, swedesboro and philadelphia, 29 degrees this afternoon. the wind finally dies down tonight. then our attention turns to the weekend and the potential for a major snowstorm. the heaviest snow expected on saturday with temperatures just above freezing. clearing out on sunday. a better look at the timing and the storm coming together as it crosses the country when i come back in 10 minutes. >> 6:42, 17 degrees. we launched sky force 10 over what is a problem, has been a problem on 95. >> multi-vehicle accident. katy has an update. >> these two crashes happened in minutes of each oth sore what we have is sky force one over 95 southbound at cottman avenue. you can tell that the emergency crews i think have pushed all of the cars involved off to the shoulder because we're seeing traffic running pretty smoothly

though slowly but smoothly around it. so what you have is 95 southbound at cottman avenue, multi-vehicle crash. quhil things are running slowly around that scene, it is off to the shoulder and i think those lane restrictions have lifted. we go to my computer i can show you a camera from 95 southbound south of center city philadelphia as you make your way to the exit for 476 before that turn-off for 476. traffic is going slowly but i'm seeing that your drive time is about 16 minutes which is average. so that's headed southbound between the vine and the blue route, average speeds in the 50s and from what i saw from our camera, that accident had cleared. so residual delays there. so we have a lot going on on 95. but i will keep you up to date. area bridges are free and clear. mass transit is slowly because

ten minutes before 7:00. a frigid morning. we issued a first alert for bitter cold temperatures. it's nice and clear look at the great view from here at the studios, cold at 17 with the wind gusting to 26 miles an hour. look at that flag in center city. it's a live view from the loews hotel, we will see brilliant sunshine all day long. but the wind will hold the temperatures down during the day so it stays below freezing. even without the wind it's cold. 13 in chester springs, wilmington is 15 degrees, look at the teens for pottstown, allentown, quakertown and reading, reading feels like it's below zero with the wind blowing and solidly in the teens and delaware and south jersey. we'll see the temperatures climb. look how clear it is, brilliant sunshine through the day but clouds will be building as we head toward the weekend.
