Birdies were bountiful on Sunday at the TPC of the Twin Cities course in Blaine. Jeff Sluman shot a record 28 on the front nine and ended up with a 62, putting him at 16-under par for the tournament and giving him a real shot to win after starting the third round seven shots off the lead.
Second round leader Tom Pernice Junior came through in the clutch, though. Pernice dropped an improbable 45-foot birdie putt on number 17 to pull into a tie with Sluman, then hit a near-perfect approach on the 18th hole to set up a two-putt for birdie and his first Champions Tour victory.
Pernice earned $262, 500 with the win, shooting a final round 68 to finish with a 199 total, 17-under par. Sluman and Corey Pavin tied for second place.
Local golfer Don Berry of Edinburgh, USA in Brooklyn Park shot a 70 Sunday, the best of his three rounds. Berry tied for 63rd place, finishing two-under par for the tournament.
