Storytelling Panel: How Might We Create Educational Opportunities to Disrupt the School-to-Prison Pipeline
Tyson Amir Mustafa, Ashanti Branch, Shanley Rhodes
Mustafa and Rhodes, teachers at Five Keys Charter Schools, and Branch, founder of non-profit Ever Forward Club, use personal narratives to explore the means by which educators might disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline. Their experiences highlight the importance of consistency, relevance, contextual awareness and cultural fluency in connecting with at-risk and in-risk youth and guiding them to complete their education and stay out of prison. In answering audience questions, the panelists begin to explore avenues for correcting flaws in the system.
