temperatures--- people are looking for ways to warm up indoors... but there are some major no- nos. when using a space heater-- do not use extension cords... and make sure they are not too close to other items. also unplug them when not in use. do not use gas appliances to heat your home. you run a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning... beware of candles-- they can lead to fire. if you are lighting them-- never leave them unattended. drivers are navigating around more orange barrels. as new construction zones are popping up all over the valley. fox 5's faith tanner is live near the 95-- where some lane closures just went into effect tonight tonight-- two lanes of the 95 south are closed... near the spaghetti bowl but tomorrow-- different lanes closures take effect here.

advice on how to safely nagivate through all the road work. : "i've noticed cones everywhere construction zones everywhere" construction zones adding more stress for drivers. many say the road work seems endless. : "that's a real big headache for everybody" starting tomorrow-- one lane on each side of the 95 will be closed at night on weekdays. from rancho drive to the spaghetti bowl. this is part of project neon.

that little strech so just budget some extra time when reaching your final destination" next week-- construction also starts on the summerlin parkway. with cone zones all over the valley--- ndot wants drivers to slow down when they see the orange barrels. "if you get caught speeding through a construction zone, fines double so it can be a pricey proposition" n-dot also says pay attention to signs... that warn you when work zones are coming up. so you can prepare to switch lanes or move over before you get stuck. : "slow down and be aware of a change comming up" some drivers tell me they've learned to accept all the construction-- and hope it ends up meaning a smoother commute down the road. police custody in north las vegas for a few days before being recaptured is now being linked to more crimes... fox5's miguel martinez valle has dug through police reports and talked to the district attorneyand one of the victims family members about the alleged crime spree you may remember alonso perez as the man who broke out of handcuffs and escaped police custody... now police are saying his original shooting arrest may not be his only crime, theyre connecting him to 5 other crimes that happened this summer. " sometimes she just be there, and she will look up, and she will be smiling, i say are you talking to your daddy? did you daddy come visit you?" it's been 3 months since baby malia last saw her dad. 3 months since ketra nestor last saw her son. " i miss my son, it hurts, i don't know how long the hurt will be there, but it hurts... i have to deal with it, i have to" police tell me alonso perez shot mohommad robinson outside a local mcdonalds

from cartridge casings found at the crime scene have connected perez to a series of other shootings... " if these accusations turn out to be true he's a dangerous guy, and he has according to the accusations caused a lot of harm to a lot of people" i went through police reports. in them, i found perez's crime spree started on july 25th... he shot at a local motel. the report calls it assault with a deadly weapon... < in corner of timeline video of motel crime> on august 15th another shooting, this time battery with a deadly weapon five days later, a deadly shooting, police are investigating perez for murder with a deadly weapon then, august 27th: robinson's murder. < video of robinson on boxx in corner> just a few hours later, on august 28th... perez is accused of shooting and killing a man on a motorcycle... " had it not been for what happened with mohommad, he probably would still be running a muck, killing people, and getting away with it" after the shootings, police arrested perez and had him in a holding cell. perez broke out of handcuffs and

vegas police custody. officers recaptured him 4 days later. the district attorney is now considering the death penalty. " if he's elligable for the death penalty we are gonna take a hard look at it, because the accusations are that he's killed at least two people and caused a lot of harm" robinson's mother says she does not want perez to get the death penalty. instead she hopes he gets life in prison and changes his life around by turning to god... mmv, ffn, ll perez is expected back on court next week for one of the battery cases he will be in and out of court for 5 of the cases against him in the next few months. las vegas workers joined thousands in the "fight for fifteen" day of disruption protests. workers taking to the strip... saying they are fed up with low wages... and say they have no plans of backing down. "too many of us out here struggling right now on what we're making. we're not making enough.

families for the things that we need, basic needs." fast-food cooks..baggage handlers..uber drivers and even hospital workers are all protesting across the country. immigration group--- plan action-- sent us this video tonight from the strip.... where police made six arrests... the fight for fifteen has led to wage hikes for 22 million underpaid workers. m-g-m started the trend,,, now caesars entertainment is following suit.... when it comes to paid parking on the strip. eight of cae nine properties will launch the paid valet and self parking initiative.... the rio all-suite hotel and casino will not be included in the program. the company says the move will improve the parking experience for guests... locals with i-d will still be able to self park for free. the properties will start charging in late december. students in north las vegas--- unveiled a new welcome sign greeting visitors and locals into their community. the previous sign was battered and graffitti ridden--so the students asked north las vegas mayor john lee

ago--- after months of waiting ... the name of our n-h-l team was announced... the knights.... not only caught the attention of hockey fans... but also the army's golden knight parachute team... but according to yahoo sports.... there is name is not an issue. the fayetteville observer quoted a spokeswoman for the army marketing and research group saying that the military was "reviewing the situation and figuring out what the way ahead would be." bill foley says he isn't worried because you can use a similar name- in different industries. and quote-- his team's name "was fully cleared by

u-n-l-v's student newspaper "the rebel yell" isn't "the rebel yell" anymore-- the paper officially announced it's name change! say hello to the "scarlet and gray free press."

because of it's racist ties to the confederacy. it turns out a "rebel yell" was a war cry used in the civil war. the new name is here to stay only if the paper can find funding. the paper is still looking at options to see if they can afford to stay in business. "we would like a variety or a diverse source of funding so we don't want just one source so we're looking at other options. definitely talking to the rj. the one stipulation i would have is they can't touch our editorial content. " this morning .. outgoing nevada senator harry reid released a statement praising the paper for the name change. he says... "there were many who felt that that was disparaging name for the paper; that the civil war ended a long time ago, and we shouldn't hearken back to the civil war and the confederacy." "i am proud of these students who did this." chick-fil-a is coming to the valley next year... and they're hoping to hire about 100 new workers. the famous franchise is getting ready for a january grand opening. there's going to

henderson locations-- one near stephanie and warm springs... and another near eastern and saint rose. they're recruiting chicken lovers to fill both full-time and part-time positions. applications can be submitted online. tis' the season of giving and one local community stepped up their game to put a smile on some kids faces. "skye canyon" just had their 100-th home closing so... they decided to celebrate by donating 100 bikes and helmets to the "boys and girls club of southern nevada" they said it was the perfect way to spend "giving tuesday"-- a national day where people are encouraged to volunteer or donate to their favorite charities. "since bike riding and trails and parks are such a fundamental component of our community, we thought it was great to donate bikes to the boys and girls club and to kids to hopefully start them off on a lifelong learned adventure with bikes." the c-e-o of the boys and girls club says some of those bikes will also go to underprivileged students in the clark county

you see a man walk around the front, get in the driver's seat, start the car and take off. look how fast he takes off out of my driveway. vecchio says that all happened in minutes monday evening when she went back inside her home to get her purse. i was in the house for about 3 minutes, that's when he ran up vecchio told us police officers took a report, then she turned to social media. i went on fb, posted surveillance video, picture of my vehicle, please repost. tuesday morning, she w message from a stranger. i get a message on fb from a guy saying he has my vehicle safe and sound in his driveway, and he has it, he bought it off some guy at boulder station for 1000 or 1500$ and i can come pick it up vecchio thinks the man's story sounds fishy, but is glad to have her car back. nats- door close the door handle is broken, (1801 door handle broken) and the back is empty. it

supreme court's ruling the right to burn the american flag as a form of a free speech-- trump's transition spoke out.... taken just as the plane was getting ready to take off for the copa sudamerica finals in medellin, colombia. 77 people were on board the flight.... when it slammed into the mountains, exploding.... killing 71. before the crash.... the pilots declared an electrical emergency...and then all contact was lost. this afternoon, colombian investigators did find the two black boxes at the crash site, describing them as "in perfect condition." all but three injured players from the chapecuensa soccer club were on the plane. were also were on board. people from around the world -- are in cuba paying respects to fidel castro. the nation in a week of mourning. dianne gallagher is in cuba with the latest. the fallen leader "fidel castro dedicated his whole life to form a historical conscious in the cuban people. and i believe that a people without a historical conscious is a people without a soul." his death isn't just affecting the cuban people. in caracas, venezuela people stood in line to sign a book of condolences. and people from all over the world arranged to travel to cuba to participate in the national week of mourning. we're here because fidel was a very good friend to ireland." from here, his ass ceremonial journey east across the country to santiago, the reverse of the route castro and his band of rebels took to seize power from dictator fulgencio batista in 1959. castro led the island nation for nearly 60 years. a heroic revolutionary to some....but to others, a dictator who ignored human rights, free speech and free elections. his prisons filled with political enemies. many cubans say -- castro's legacy will continue long after his death.

these are his children and grandchildren." in havana cuba - i'm dianne gallagher. an oklahoma police officer will stand trial for manslaughter... after she shot and killed an unarmed man back in september. a judge ruling today-- there is enough evidence for former tulsa officer-- betty shelby's case to stand trial. shelby says she shot terrance crutcher because she feared for her life... prosecutors say she acte unreasonably.... because crutcher was not armed... and followed her commands. shelby is due back in court on december 15th. a woman opens a plane's emergency exit moments after it landed in texas... the whole ordeal... caught on camera. the woman opened the hatch... jumped onto the planes wing and then onto the ground... before taking off running... all of this while the plane was still taxiing at houston's george bush intercontinental airport. other passengers

wildfires are raging in the southest region of the united states... the fires... buring at least 100 acres. in tennessee -- flames are forcing the evacuation of thousands of people -- and are believed to have wiped out an entire resort. fox's jonathon serrie has more on the damage the fires are causing. firefighters had been hoping for rain. but the storms were preceded by heavy winds, that spread wildfires burning through the drought- stricken region. miller says" this is a fire for the history books because it is unlike anything most have ever seen. fires which had been largedly contained to the wilderness are now threatening populated areas in eastern tennessee -- including the popular tourist town of gatlinburg,

damaged resorts and forced the evacuation of an estimated 14- thousand residents and visitors. cooper says: "we were in our cabin preparing supper and we heard a knock at the door and it was a policeman and said that he would recommend we leave because the fire was getting close to where the cabin was. so we got all of our stuff that we could gather up and put in the truck and came down here." the fires are also affecting the neighboring town of pigeon forge -- home to dolly parton's popular theme park. official twitter account announced that it's suspending park operations on wednesday due the the fires. nats "hold off on burning leaves. tie up chains on trailers to avoid sparks. don't park vehicles on dry grass. even a cozy campfire could spark a wildfire." one day before her theme-park was evacuated the country star appeared with smoky bear in a public service announcement to urge caution in the dry conditions. an entire community is pulling together to look out for residents and

fast food workers to $15 is outrageous! most of these workers are students. what about those of us who worked our way up from the bottom? i worked at an a&w for $3 an hour when i was 15. i'm now 59 and i owned my own restaurant, a bakery and now working as a food service director for an assisted living facility and i barely make that amount. voicemails! hamburger places, which a lot of us worked at, is not designed to make mortgage payments. it is designed to buy books to go to school. got it? if you don't want to get paid less than minimum wage, refuse the job! fast food workers are [going to] go on strike. oh what are we going to do without them? oh my god, i just don't know!...anyway $15 an hour is out of line for that, it's just not worth it. i mean, convenient stores should get that before fast food, their jobs are dangerous. fidel castro has died. and some wonder how relations between the u-s and cuba will move
