witnessing a certain, in fact an absolutely obvious degradation, from a political point of view, of the perception of democracy in western societies, in this case at the level of the european parliament." despite putin's public protest, experts who analyze social media say the russians are stepping up their game. o'neil says: "they're trying to give the appearance that there's a public opinion, public attitude, public sentiment that favors whatever position they're trying to advance-- whether it's comfort with them being in the region they're in or comfort with their policies, or trying to mask some of the discontent with the things they are doing." the 2016 election exposed the prevalence and popularity of so- called fake news on different platforms, and with different agendas. kurtz says: "i think even ten years ago the russians would have had a hard time getting people to believe these fake stories but now with so many people sharing on twitter, facebook and instagram its almost like rocket fuel for propagandists trying to influence american elections and culture," testifying before the thanksgiving break, the outgoing director of national intelligence said cited recent successes in this arena. clapper says: "russians have a very active and aggressive capability to conduct

moscow to aggressively push its propaganda, and deflect criticism aimed at russian policies. after the european union voted wednesday to counter moscow's disinformation campaigns, president vladimir putin accused the europeans them of censoring dissenting views. putin through translator "if this is all true, what you've just said and if such a decision is made, this means that we are witnessing a certain, in fact an absolutely obvious degradation, from a political point of view, of the perception of democracy in western societies, in this case at the level of the european parliament." despite putin's public protest, experts who analyze social media say the russians are stepping up their game. o'neil says: "they're trying to give the appearance that there's a public opinion, public attitude, public sentiment that favors whatever position they're trying to advance-- whether it's comfort with them being in the region they're in or comfort with their policies, or trying to mask some of the discontent with the things they are doing." the 2016 election exposed the prevalence and popularity of so- called fake news on
