cooking and having family over or heading to someone else's for thanksgiving dinner... as wonderful as the holiday is... it can also be a stressful time for fox5's kathleen jacob joins us after talking to a stress counselor to find out how you can get through the holiday without losing it. kathleen what'd you learn? christine, john, i learned politics... especially after this election season... is a definite no no when it comes to conversation around the dinner table... but we know it's probably gonna happen... so it's betteto prepare for it, accept it, and learn how to deal with it. counselors i talked to today said they've been flooded with patients freaking out about dealing with family and the stress of the season... and one of the first things they tell people is to find escape routes. as soon as conversation starts to get intense... people start arguing... you feel like you're going to explode... walk away to somewhere you can't be followed... like the bathroom. another trick that'll buy you a little more alone time... say you forgot something at the store and just get out. taking a few minutes to yourself to just

arguments. another thing counsleors say to do... set clear rules before the big meal. if politics or religion are off the table to talk about.. make sure everyone knows and stick to it. " initially the first thing i'm saying to everybody is 'this is like a first date.' we're not gonna talk about religion or you know politics so lets keep it nice and sweet. normally we talk about plans for shopping if you found like that one gift or like getting pointers from everyone else in the house. " another thing that'll calm you down quickly if things s getting overwhelming... find a cold surface.. like a countertop and firmly place your hands on it... make sure your feet are planted firmly on the ground and concentrate on how that feels as you breathe... it's a go to trick that brings your heartrate down quickly. through it all... the biggest thing to remember is why you're doing what you're doing. try not to get bogged down in the details and the stress... remember that thanksgiving should be a happy time... and it'll all be over before you know it. live in the studio...kathleen jacob...fox5 news... local. las vegas. tonight at 6... we'll
