burglars ransack her henderson home.. i'm john huck. i'm christine maddela. police say this happened early this morning to a 72-year old woman in sun city anthem. here's a look at where this crime took place.. it was at a home on garden city avenue just off sun city anthem boulevard. henderson police say this morning two men broke into her home at 2:15 ... once inside they found the woman .. tied her up .. and ransacked her home. at some point, police say one of the men also showed a firearm and was demanding valuables from the woman. the men ran and are still on the loose ... the woman did receive minor injuries. police say she did not get a good look at the men and could not give a good description. when we spoke with police, they had a message for everyone. michelle french / henderson police department "one thing henderson police would like to remind residents is to take steps to protect their home and loved ones. make sure your doors are locked, make sure that you've secured your windows using wooden dowels to protect your sliding glass doors

windows that are accessible." henderson police tell fox5 they are following up on leads.. and ask if you know anything about this violent crime .. to call them with tips. a plea of "guilty" from javier righetti. he's the man accused of brutally killing a 15-year-old girl. he entered the plea with no promise that he won't be put to death for the 2011 murder of arbor view high school sophomore alyssa otremba - who had texted her mom that she was walking home. she was abducted while walking underneath a tunnel near the 95 and grand teton. righetti admits to kidnapping, sexually assaulting and stabbing otremba dozens of times before burning her corpse. a jury next month will consider whether righetti should be executed. a huge traffic mess on the strip this afternoon.. a box truck driver hit a palm tree before the truck flipped on its side nearthe flamingo.. police had to close down the northbound side of the strip from the scene down to

likely caucus goers in nevada are evenly split when it comes to their pick for saturday's democratic caucus. a new cnn poll found that 48 percent of voters say they'll support hillary clinton - while senator bernie sanders follows close behind at 47 percent. nats the two presidential hopefuls have been in and around the silver state with the hopes of edging out the competition. nats in a satellite interview with fox 5 -sanders said it's his track record sets him apart sanders: anyone who checks my record..will find that after 25 years in the us congress there is no one who has a strongre pro union pro worker voting record and life's activites than bernie sanders does while that may be true -sanders and clinton continue to battle it out for key endorsements including the afl- cio labor federation. here in nevada - the culinary workers union says they wont be announcing an endorsement this primary cycle. a stark change from 2008 when the union supported obama in his run against

mark peplowski, proffesor of poli sci at csn: the culinary union still hasn't endorsed anyone in this race and theyre arguably the most powerful union in nevada. and they've stayed out of it. theyre kind of stepping back saying we're not going to get into politics at least not today. while the endorsement of workers unions remains unclear - the new cnn poll shows that clinton is seen as a better pick when it comes to race relations, foreign policy and immigration. clinton: so we have work to do to stop bad things from happening and bad actors making our lives hard. meanwhile - clinton and sanders are more evenly split on the economy. sanders' non-convential policies have earned him support among new voters and the working class. senator sanders also talked about how important caucusing is even though it can be day long process. he said if our veterans could fight for our freedom - we as americans can take the time to go out and caucus. reporting live in the news room abby theodros fox5news local las vegas. senator sanders

after being attacked with a machete last week - nicky the k9 is recovering quickly from surgery. meanwhile - the suspect nicky was trying to apprehend refused to come to his initial appearance this morning. fox 5's ophelia young is outside of metro's south central area command... after catching up on the k-9's progress. i did and his handler says nicky was eager to get right back to work as soon as the cone came off. but he's going to have to take it easy until the stitches come out. from a surgery just five days ago to tugging on his leash today... nicky's spirit is ready for work. "panting" "if we took that cone off him like i just did and set it out him out here right now he wouldnt have any hesitation in doing his job." but his stitches say other wise. last thursday - nicky was sent into an apartment after police say a barricaded suspect refused to come out. witnesses had called in tolavius timmons after hearing gunshots his apartment.

rolling in a 5 thousand dollar robot weighing 600 pounds - which they say timmons knocked over and broke. after 9 hours of negotiating, metro's last resort was to send in nicky to bring out timmons. metro believes timmons stabbed nicky with a machete 5 times - during which they didnt hear one sound from nicky. "in fact he was trying to go back in there and i had him by the collar i was taking him out to get him out of the way of the swat guys and i looked down i had blood all over my hands and is that from the suspect or you and i looked down and he was bleeding all over the place." the 8 year old melanois was rushed to a nearby animal hospital where he immediately underwent surgery. it was the most serious injury metro had ever seen to their k9s. metro has 18 k9 handlers - all whom treat their dogs like just another officer. timmons prosecuter amy ferreira says he

"they are in fact officers they are trained to uphold the laws of this community just like a man or a woman whos a police officer would be" since thursday - nicky has seen growing community support. "the reason why it sometimes feels like people are more concerned about animals is becuase animals dont have a voice." "whos a good dog? whos a good dog? is it you?" though nicky doesnt have a voice -his hander says his spirit is loud enough. ""one of the traits that makes him such a good police dog is he doesnt back down." nicky will be alright - but many question still remaining about tovalius timmons case - such as were there drugs involved, was it an attempted suicide that sparked the 9 hour stand off - metro says they are still working to get those answers - reporting live... for the time being, timmons faces 3 felonies.. he is scheduled to be in court for the first time tomorrow.

the daytona 500 is sunday and the eyes of the racing world are in florida right now. that's where we find fox 5's kevin bolinger. he joins us from daytona beach with a preview. nascar is different then other sports because their super bowl is the first week of the season. teams though have been preparing the entire offseason for this one race. it's the daytona 500 and this year it should be a doozy. nats drivers were on the track getting practice in for the biggest race of the regular season. 20 year old chase elliott is the youngest pole winner at daytona and has the added pressure of drving gordon's number 24.
