new year new week. coming up on "early today," dangerously cold arctic temperatures are ahead for millions as a bitter cold will begin blanketing parts of the u.s. for the week. jury selection begins today in the trial of the alleged boston bomber. the incredible details of a 7-year-old's lone plane crash survivor. and breaking news on the shooting death of a hge fund millionaire. the donald fires his first celebrity apprentice. and new jersey governor chris christie can kiss detroit voters good-bye. it is monday january 5th, "early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm milissa rehberger. a blast of dangerously cold weather is about to hit the u.s. millions will be in the cold zone. the south, the midwest and the east coast.
temperatures will be 10 to 35 degrees below average. in connecticut, wintry weather proving deadly. a jogger was hit by a snowplow. in mississippi, it wasn't the cold but tornadoes, two twisters shredded blocks in several counties. nbc meteorologist bill karins will have the full forecast in a few minutes. in a few hours, jury selection is set to begin in the trial of accused boston bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. it is expected to be one of the most high profile in recent history. with that in mind the big question is can an impartial jury be found in boston? nbc's jay gray is there for us this morning. jay, the jury pool is enormous here in this case right. so how long will the process actually take? >> reporter: yeah milissa, more than 3,000 potential jurors here and the judge says they can find an impartial jury but it is going to take weeks, several weeks in fact. that's the federal courthouse just behind me the sun has come up here. we have seen an increase in
security, even police boats in the harbor here. the courthouse has become the focus of the bombing tragedy now. just two miles from where it all unfolded. in the almost two years since the attack -- >> i am standing! >> reporter: -- the path to recovery has been difficult. the steps slow and painful, but always moving forward. and later this morning, survivors in the city will take another major step as jury selection begins in the trial of bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. he's pleaded not guilty to the attack that killed three and injured 260 during the 2013 boston marathon and to the murder of mit police officer sean collier after the attack. today, more than a thousand potential jurors have been summoned to the federal courthouse in south boston to begin the trial. boston's mayor understands it is a necessary part of the healing here but insists just like the attack what happens in the courtroom will not define his
city. >> people just you know people just feel that they know what happened on that day and they -- i think a lot of people say, let's just move this thing beyond so the families can have peace. >> reporter: peace and justice that so many hope to find in a federal courtroom just two miles from the site of the deadly blast. now, the jury selection process that starts this morning expected to last several weeks as we talk about the trial itself milissa, could go four months or longer. that's the latest here in boston. back to you. >> jay, thank you. rested and relaxed, president obama is hitting the ground running. the president is getting ready to kick off a multicity tour. he's taking a different tact than before though selling the agenda to the american people ahead of a state of the union while facing a fully republican congress head on. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington. tracie what's the plan. >> reporter: the plan for the president seems to be to get out of washington and he just got
back from hawaii but he'll only be here for a few days before embarking on this road trip where he hopes to sell some of the ideas we'll hear again in the state of the union. president obama's hitting the road this week to lay out his agenda talking jobs in detroit, home sales in phoenix, and college in tennessee. >> i want to work with them. i want to get things done. >> reporter: republicans are approving the keystone pipeline will likely be the first thing to hit the president's desk. >> which would put a lot of people to work almost immediately. >> reporter: not enough democrats, say. >> an amendment to add clean energy jobs. >> he's going to have to decide between jobs and the extreme supporters of not having the pipeline. >> reporter: next for republicans -- >> we have to pass the budget. there has only been one budget passed in the last six years. >> reporter: funding homeland security while blocking the president's immigration orders. >> i do think immigration should be done piece by piece. >> i'm not opposed to
negotiating with the administration. >> reporter: republicans will try again to roll back healthcare focusing on something democrats may agree with. getting rid of the tax on medical devices. >> the hope is that we will find a way to pay for this and get this passed on. we are working on that. >> reporter: cuba iran syria, also expected to take center stage when the new congress returns tomorrow. and the white house says the president already is going to do something this week that republicans in the past have not liked too much more executive orders things he can do on his own are coming this week milissa, along with the things he's trying to get congress to do. >> always unpopular on the other side. tracie thank you very much. this morning, federal investigators in kentucky have finally cleared the mangled wreckage. a twin engine plane crashed there killing four members of the same family on friday. they're also learning more about the lone survivor a 7-year-old girl still dressed for her florida vacation. authorities say sailor gutzler was in shorts and short sleeves
when she walked through thick woods and brier patches in the dark and in near freezing temperatures. larry wilkins describes the moment when he knocked on her door. >> i go open the door and there is a little girl standing there with a bloody nose and bloody legs and bloody arms. >> sailor is safe with family members now and they're asking for prayers and also privacy. the nypd is investigating the sunday shooting death of a founder of a $200 million hedge fund. thomas gilbert sr. was found with a gunshot wound to his head in his manhattan apartment near the united nations. authorities have not ruled out suicide, but they say gilbert's son has been taken into custody and is being questioned. no charges have been filed. breaking news overnight, a serious scare for carolina panthers head coach juan rivera. a fire ripped through his charlotte home early this morning. he and his family were at home at the time.
rivera said he smelled smoke and heard the smoke detectors go off. everybody made it out okay with no injuries reported. thankfully fire officials are investigating the cause of that fire. now to sunday's nfl playoff games. the nfc wild card cowboys versus lions and a thrilling finale. >> third down and goal. romo protected. end zone. touchdown! >> that is terrence williams with his second td of the game. and check out who is celebrating in the owners box. cowboys boss jerry jones and new jersey governor chris christie? 24-20. they travel to green bay next. earlier in the afc wild card game colts and bengals, andrew luck stepping into the pocket to avoid the rush. he gets it out just in time to his hit receiver donte moncrief. they go on to win 26-10. they face the broncos next.

stories making news this morning, search and recovery efforts are on hold right now, but earlier today calmer weather in the java sea gave indonesian divers another chance to try and recover wreckage and more bodies from airasia flight 8501. four more bodies a woman and three men, were identified today, bringing the total of identified to 13. since last week's crash, 37 bodies have been recovered. weather officials now say icing of the plane's engine likely caused that crash. in oklahoma there is a law preventing people from wearing hoodies during a crime. now, a proposal for an amendment to that law could make it illegal for anyone to hide their identity in public. the fine for your fashion crime is $500. and condolences are pouring in following the passing of veteran espn anchor stuart scott. he lost his seven-year battle with cancer yesterday. scott is being remembered as a trailblazer, not only for

welcome back to "early today" on this monday. what is interesting, the last couple of really big cold outbreaks, alaska was extremely warm not this time around. i saw fairbanks now drop to negative 25 degrees. this cold outbreak is pretty much from alaska to canada and much of the low erer 48. but not so much in the northwest or throughout the west. this is a one spot where it will remain with pacific air, relatively mild. rainy today, 54. not a bad middle of the week in seattle. as i was saying compared to last week this is gold in los angeles. 77 78 we're liking the looks of this forecast. warmer than miami by the end of the week. >> beautiful forecast. thank you. the box office report topped entertainment news today.
