the announcement that could come today. friday, july 11th, 2014. >> from nbc news this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> and morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. what a crowd of tweens we have outside today. >> wow. >> you can just hear them. >> you can see they're crying. i've seen several crying. >> there's crying, fainting already out there. people are very excited to hear these five young women sing. i can't wait to see them in just a few minutes coming up on "today." >> fifth harmony will take our plaza and some fans have been waiting for days out there. first let's get to today's top story and dylan, you've got it. violent storms in our south. lots to talk about out west with the wildfires as well. >> you know, both coasts seeing different sorts of weather. we are looking now at the
cleanup of some of the crazy storms we had in virginia beach yesterday. it pretty much encompassed a five-block radius. we had wind gusts near 70 miles per hour. this happened around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. we saw 2 to 3 inches of rain in just an hour's period of time. and we also had reports of a tornado, although it hasn't been confirmed. there's a possible tornado but you can see from the damage with the treetops taken off there it was possible to be a tornado. on the flip side of that, out in washington state, about 250 firefighters are battling this blaze which is 0% contained. it has grown now to 18,000 acres. this is about two hours east of seattle in mills county. and we are looking at this to be a major concern because the heat is so intense out in that part of the country. temperatures are running about 10 to 15 degrees above average. and the brush is dry. there hasn't been any rain there for a long period of time. that is going to help fuel these fires.
we have excessive heat watches in effect saturday at 11:00 a.m. to sunday 7:00 p.m. throughout the entire weekend right in through here is where we'll see the temperatures 15 degrees above average. and the fire is up through here. it's one of several fires that are occurring in washington state right now. as we go through the weekend, 20 degrees above average in seattle. so it's that heat that is certainly going to make matters worse for the firefighters. and on the flip side of that-- that's three flip sides. on the flip side of that, we are actually talking about a polar vortex. a summer version of the polar vortex. >> thank you, dylan. i can't tell you how much i've missed saying polar vortex. thank you. >> dylan, than. we're learning more this morning about that tragic shooting in the houston suburbs that left six people dead including four children. and the teenager who survived is now being hailed as a hero. nbc's miguel almaguer has the latest on the investigation. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. 33-year-old ron lee haskell will
be in court today to face murder charges for allegedly gunning down and killing six of his family members. but this morning it's a 15-year-old girl who is being called a hero for saving some of her other family members from the same fate. six different colored balloons released into the air. symbols of the lives lost in the deadly shooting in the houston suburbs. late wednesday night police officials in harris county say ron lee haskell forced his way into the home of his ex-wife's sister katie stay and her husband stephen trying to find out where his ex-wife and children were living. the stays' five kids were the only ones home. haskell holding them at gunpoint until their parents returned and opening fire on all seven members of the family. the sole survivor, 15-year-old cassidy stay bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head called police to tell them where haskell was headed. >> we were able to dispatch constable deputies to that location.
it was our understanding he was going to go to that location there and kill more people. >> reporter: after a slow-speed pursuit and a three and a half hour standoff, haskell surrendered to authorities. this his latest run-in with the law. in 2008, a guilty plea to domestic violence for assaulting his wife. >> he had been hurting her and she decided to leave at that time. >> reporter: haskell's wife filed for divorce a year ago agreeing to a mutual restraining order with haskell only having supervised visits with their four children. then just last week haskell's 61-year-old mother filed this restraining order saying her son had duct taped her wrists and choked her until she passed out. then he told me he was going to kill me, my family, and any officer who stops him. this morning back in texas, a community mourns the loss of cassidy stay's family. the lone survivor is being hailed a hero.
cassidy stay's grandfather released a statement last night. it reads in part, we are in awe of the bravery and courage of her calling 911. that act likely saved our lives. willie, savannah. >> miguel almaguer, on an unthinkable story for us. miguel, thank you. we'll turn to craig melvin. natalie's making her way back from alaska. we got news overseas this morning. >> yes. the death toll is mounting in israel this morning after another day of nonstop air strikes in the gaza strip. nbc's ayman mohyeldin is in gaza city witvery latest for us. >> reporter: good morning, craig. it's the fourth day of this israeli offensive on gaza to try and stop palestinian rocket fire. neither side shows signs of backing down. if you do the math, 1,100 israeli air strikes over the past four days. that's one air strike every five minutes nonstop. palestinians, they, too, show no signs of backing down. 550 missiles fired into israel since the beginning of this conflict.
israel's aerial assault on gaza continues targeting suspected rocket depots, launching sites and militants' homes. hamas is firing back sending at least 170 missiles into israel. sirens wailing in cities as far north as tel aviv and haifa, nearly 100 miles north of gaza. one today hit a gas station in astea setting it on fire and damaging nearby cars. and for the first time two rockets from lebanon were fired into israel. the israeli military responding by shelling lebanese territory. the growing concern, will the conflict escalate to a ground war? thousands of israeli troops have been called up waiting for orders to invade. in the meantime, civilians on both sides are paying the price. nbc's martin fletcher reporting from a makeshift maternity ward in an israeli bomb shelter during a rocket attack. >> reporter: again, we only just entered when there was another siren. the bunker was too small for all
the mothers to fit in. >> very weird and also scary, but it is our reality. >> reporter: in gaza, an israeli air strike hit the home of this woman who is three months pregnant. in the shock of the attack, she says she miscarried and lost her baby. all she has left, her first sonogram and a paper trail of the journey it took to conceive the baby she hoped to one day have. this morning israel's main international airport in tel aviv saw flight disruptions as a result of incoming palestinian rocket fire. there's no doubt about it, the rockets have disrupted the way of life inside israel. but here in gaza, people are hoping to live through another day. craig. >> ayman mohyeldin for us in gaza city this morning. ayman, thank you. back here the u.s. border patrol has said it stopped sending central american children and families to san diego after they're arrested in south texas. the experiment sparked quite a backlash in one california city when protesters blocked the road
and forced bus loads of immigrants to reroute. meantime on capitol hill, lawmakers are working on a possible compromise as to deport migrant families more quickly. it's all part of president obama's $3.7 billion emergency request to address the border crisis. an american airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing in st. louis thursday when a man allegedly wrote threatening messages on his cell phone. another passenger saw the man typing out the messages and alerted flight attendants. after that plane landed, that man was led away in handcuffs but was later determined not to be a threat. most baseball coaches teach young players not to slide head first. and this morning some evidence why they are probably right. this video comes to us from a south korean baseball league and check it out. the runner tries to slide into third base. thanks for the music.

prisoner bowe bergdahl. he was freed in that controversial exchange more than a month ago and now a newly released photo from his time in captivity is getting a lot of attention. nbc's national correspondent peter alexander is on the story in texas this morning. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. today marks exactly four weeks to the day since army sergeant bowe bergdahl arrived back home in the u.s. at the brooke army medical center. he is now in the final phase of his reintegration process even as he faces more scrutiny. a few more weeks. that's how much longer military officials say bergdahl has ahead of him here in san antonio. the former p.o.w. has been easing his way back in the public. allowed to go with supervision to restaurants, shopping, a library.
but again this week, bowe bergdahl's time is raising questions. this photo posted to a twitter account societied with the taliban and al qaeda show bergdahl smiling next to an official of the network. the military is saying it's 100% propaganda. >> we certainly have to understand this photo was when bergdahl was under duress. so we're going to have to take it from that perspective. >> reporter: as bergdahl who's now 28 prepares to leave military care, experts warn that his new freedom will be both liberating and scary. >> he is going to be exposed to an intense media burst of publicity and a lot of it will not be positive. >> reporter: from the controversy surrounding his capture, disappearing from his afghanistan post in 2009, to the circumstances of his release in exchange for five taliban militants from guantanamo bay. bergdahl has been receiving some training on dealing with the
media but he won't have an escort when he's on leave or off duty. at that point, he's on his own. >> the way he is welcomed back will be a critical factor in how he does not just short-term but long-term. >> reporter: and one question that all of us have been wondering is whether bowe bergdahl has spoken or perhaps seen his family. the pentagon has not given us any updates on that. last month they said he had not. i asked the former army psychiatrist if that would be unusual. she said that is unusual but there's a lot unusual about his case. savannah. >> that's for sure. peter alexander, thank you so much. all right. now to a dustup between the united states and germany over spying after german officials asked a top u.s. intelligence officer in berlin to leave the country. chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell has the latest on this story. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the cia is under fire today accused of spying on one of america's closest and most
important allies. at the worst possible time. just as president obama needs germany's help against vladimir putin over ukraine. returning to the white house thursday evening, president obama found himself with another crisis on his hands. america's top intelligence official in germany, the cia station chief expelled from the u.s. embassy in berlin. this after not one but two germans working for the cia were accused of spying on angela merkel's government in the past two weeks. german authorities allege the agents revealed details of how much germany knew about the scope of u.s. gathering in the country. the president so far has not called merkel to apologize or explain. on thursday merkel expressed her frustration saying, spying on allies is a waste of energy in the end. this comes after edward snowden's revelation last year that the nsa was listening in on merkel's cell phone.
white house officials claim that the cia did not warn president obama. that that one agent has been caught more than a week ago. so he didn't know to apologize when talking to her. >> this is not going to end the relationship with germany, but certainly the united states needs to have a strong, healthy relationship going forward. >> reporter: administration officials say everyone spies. including germany. but germany's finance minister says the worst part of this spy story is what the cia got of no value. he said that kind of stupidity was enough to make you weep. >> andrea mitchell in washington for us. thanks. meantime, speculation is heating up this morning over where the biggest basketball star on the planet is taking his talents next season. we are talking about lebron james. thursday, signs appeared to point towards his return to cleveland. let's check the smoke signals

down first. >> skin down. also let's season the both sides. >> okay. >> all right. so we're going to cook this for about six to eight -- maybe eight to ten minutes until what you want is it to be nice and crispy and golden. you see that? >> nice. >> nice crust. once you've got this you're going to pour off a bit of fat. this a great tool. a spatula. just get under there. you've got the crispy delicious chicken thighs. they're delicious as is. but now what you want is get a lemon. you slice your lemon up. this is possibly but i hope not to cut myself. you got a bunch of slices right? you'll get the pre-sliced ones. you put them on top of the chicken, but also most importantly nestle some in there. nestle some in the pan. >> do some nestling? >> do some nestling. those are the ones that will get brown and delicious. >> this is after the ten minutes where you've got the crispy season, the lemons. >> make sure the skin is crispy.
then take the pan and go over to the oven. 425. >> okay. >> cook six to eight minutes. if you want to use a temperature thermometer, 165 is what you're looking for. >> okay. >> grab a towel. i've done this before where you're like i'll grab the pan and that hurts a bit. let's take it out. >> loungehow long was that in there? >> six to eight minutes. now you've got though cooked through chicken at this point. you're going to take it -- i almost grabbed the pan again. >> you never flipped the chicken in the pan on the stove top. >> that's the thing. you want the meat tender and juicy on that side. now we're going to make the sauce. can you see how gorgeous that is? >> it's beautiful. panel, how we feeling about this down here? >> we're on seconds down here. >> shallots. a little red chili. garlic.
oregano. a little white wine. with the magic of tv we pour that in there and chicken stock. let's wait for a minute or two before it starts to reduce and get syrupy. >> right away in the hot pan. >> you want it over medium high heat. we say in the recipe finish it with a little olive oil. but butter tastes better. you just dump the better in there. you swish it around. you get it nice and gorgeous. it's fragrant it's delicious. you get a spoon somewhere. >> right up top. >> and you're going to sort of pour it over like this. >> it smells incredible more than anything else. >> i don't know. is that the best thing ever? >> what's the final verdict? >> absolutely love it. but do you eat the lemons. >> you can. yeah they're caramely and sweet. they're not like the bitter stringent. >> it's fine. craig may eat the lemons. >> we're on the third piece now. the thighs are small.
