furniture instead./// < news music voice over: "now, nevada's first choice for news. this is 8 news now at 6." > ((dave courvoisier)) > the top two campaigns in this year's presidential race are making appearances in las vegas today. thanks for joining us... i'm dave courvoisier. ((denise valdez)) and i'm denise valdez... in for paula. former president bill clinton is in town stumping for his wife hillary... while donald trump spoke to supporters earlier today. ((dave courvoisier)) we have live team coverage from both campaigns... we'll start with patrick walker is live at the south point with a recap of what trump had to say... patrick? ((patrick walker)) dave and denise... the first of two appearances today were rather brief for donald trump... at least by his standards. he spent about 45 minutes on stage. the front- runner spoke about immigration and other republicans... and only briefly mentioned bernie sanders and hillary clinton. trump talked about making america great again... by making it rich again. and... he drew loud cheers when he said he would "blast isis off the face of the earth" and build up the military.
6:01 pm
he ramped up his talking points on china... saying the country has rebuilt itself at the expense of the united states.: ((donald trump/(r) presidential candidate: "the greatest theft in the history of the world has been what china has done to us, they've taken our jobs, they've taken our money, they've taken everything, they have rebuilt china with our money, remember that." )) ((patrick walker)) this came just moments after a protestor briefly interrupted the rally. the woman yelled "stop the hate" before police and secret service moved in. trump used it as a moment to talk about loving local law enforcement... and then called two metro officers onstage to briefly shake their hands. ((patrick walker)) trump has another appearance scheduled tonight. he'll be at the shot show at the venitian in about an hour... at an awards banquet. dave... ((dave courvoisier)) patrick... any idea how many people were at the rally today? ((patrick walker)) it's tough to say. there were no seats... so it was standing room only and it was full.
6:02 pm
about 15- hundred people inside... with many sent to overflow rooms to watch. /// ((denise valdez)) > former president bill clinton is in town tonight stumping for his wife. this as we are now less than a month away from the nevada caucus to pick the democratic presidential nominee. patranya bhoolsuwan continues our live team coverage where clinton is set to speak in about an hour. ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) people started lining up for this event more than an hour ago. they are waiting to hear the former president who tonight is making his first official stop in nevada to campaign for hillary clinton in this 2016 presidential race. the nevada democratic caucus again just less than a month away ...set for february 20th. and right now it looks like out of the early caucuses and primaries, nevada may be the

her opponent, senator bernie sanders is leading in the polls... in both iowa and new hampshire. the hillary camp has been working hard in nevada though...hitting the ground running since last april. now they are sending out the big gun .. i-e .. former president bill clinton to make the case that his wife is the best candidate for president. ((patranya bhoolsuwan)) the line starting to grow outside this event. we talked to some of the people here and they say they are as excited to see bill clinton in person as they are to hear about what hillary has to offer. we'll bring you the recap of his speech inside the gymnasium of the advanced technologies academies coming up tonight at 11. for now reporting live patranya bhoolsuwan 8 news now.// ((dave courvoisier)) > a former pastor was convicted of sexually assaulting minors today... then he was slapped with 22 new sexual charges. prosecutors say five additional victims came forward with claims

even thousands of dollars trying to make old, scratched or damaged wood furniture look new again. ((denise valdez)) but a furniture polish promises to do all that and much more for less than 15 bucks. our consumer advocate michelle mortensen wanted to see if it really works -- so tonight she puts it to the -- try it before you buy it test. ((michelle mortensen)) i had quite a few requests from viewers to test out old amish furniture products. and after seeing viewer cathy stuchell's kitchen table ... i knew we had to try it out.
6:08 pm
((michelle: cathy, why does this table need so much tlc? cathy: well, i had some renters that totally destroyed a brand new table, so here i am. )) and we're here to help. will old ammish rescue this table? we pour some on a soft cloth ((cathy: it looks like glue? )) we rub it on the heat damage ... the water spots .. and several scratches. ((michelle: it's going to take some scrubbing )) scrub and rub we did. several times. the wood itself started to look quite nice. but those scratches .. heat marks and water marks ... never really changed.... at all. ((michelle: so at the end of the day, what do you think of this product? does it work? does it do what you say it will do? cathy? if you don't have a severely damaged piece of furniture yes. )) but it says it brings furniture back to life. implying it raises furniture from the dead. cathy's table ... was knocking on death's door ... so it doesn't really do what is said it would do.
6:09 pm
polish and cleaner ... it works quite well. so much so cathy kept it .. variety of stores. and it does vary in price. anywhere from 10-15 dollars. so shop around for the best deal. customers... and a recommendation to abolish the authority. ((denise valdez)) that's adding more fuel to the argument of ride- sharing companies like uber and lyft... who say their businesses offer a better, fairer service to customers. ((dave courvoisier)) now that those two companies have been in operation for a few months... we wanted to know if they've had any effect on the taxi industry. ((denise valdez)) jeremy aguero with applied analysis joins us... he's been digging through the numbers.. what'd you find? ((jeremy aguero)) last year, ride-hailing companies uber and lyft spent a lot of time and money to get their operations legalized in the las vegas market. the taxicab industry opposed those efforts every step of the way, and now we're starting to see why. after just a few months of operation, uber and lyft are already disrupting the $425-million-a- year cab industry. last year, the number of annual taxi trips in clark county was well on its way to a record of 28 million. uber and lyft started operating
6:12 pm
setting a record, annual taxi trips plummeted by 376,000 over the final three months of the year. this is hardly unique to las vegas. cities around the world have reported similar drops in cab trips after uber and other ride-hailing companies came to town, and one company in san francisco is declaring bankruptcy in part because of the new competition. interestingly, cab traffic at mccarran international airport has so far been immune, and trips to and from the airport climbed through the end of the year. however, this growth could be short-lived since uber didn't start operating at mccarran until december and the full effect is not apparent yet. uber, lyft, and others are changing the way people travel, and that means a changing environment for both the taxicab companies in southern nevada and the 11,000 drivers who work for them. for example, at the recent ces show, some taxi companies had more cabs than drivers because many opted to drive their own
6:13 pm
((jeremy aguero)) change could be coming for the ride-hailing companies, as well. uber faces a class-action lawsuit in california challenging its classification of drivers as independent contractors instead of employees. the suit could lead to a fundamental shift in how the company, and others like it, run their businesses. i don't know how the taxicab industry will adapt and evolve from here, but i do know that disruption is here to stay. the only question is how far it will go. ((dave courvoisier)) what have cab companies in las vegas changed to better compete with what have cab companies in las vegas changed to better compete in las vegas changed to better compete with uber and others? all ahead of what's expected to be a historic snow storm that has 75- million people in it's path. communities all along the east coast are bracing for what could be this winter's biggest storm yet. but mother nature can be fickle... and some forecasters say the whole thing could just peter out. either way... states like tennessee, maryland, pennsylvania, and virginia are all preparing for the worst by declaring states of emergencies. ((denise valdez)) > because of that storm... airlines started offering travel waivers early today... allowing customers traveling through nine east coast airports to change their flight without penalty. here's a live look at mccarran tonight... we checked with airport officials and things are looking pretty smooth so far. there are a couple of canceled flights to the east coast right now... american airlines canceled two flights to charlotte, north carolina that were set to depart later tonight. you'll still want to check with your airline before heading to the airport tonight and tomorrow./// ((weather toss))

j@j@ on average, it takes three hundred americans working for a solid year, to make as much money as one top ceo. it's called the wage gap. and the republicans will make it worse by lowering taxes for those at the top and letting corporations write their own rules. hillary clinton will work to close the wage gap.
6:20 pm
a higher minimum wage, lower taxes for the middle class. she'll get the job done for us.
6:21 pm
((chris maathuis)) the rebels have put that road win over utah state behind them and are focusing all their attention on their rivals from the north. unlv goes north this weekend to face the wolfpack. they're 3-0 under interim head coach todd simon. the team seems to be a little more focused, they're taking care of the ball and playing to their strenghs... now the younger players got to understand that playing reno isn't just another game. (( )) zimmerman/unlv; "it's a big thing, this is the first year i can contribute. hopefully we can come back with a win over unr." simon/coach; "for local guys i don't think its as big of deal, they understand it, but guys ging through the first time we've got to instill in them that this is a big deal." cornish/unlv; "it's a huge rivalry, people have been talking about it all week. we just want to go make a statement and show the league we're for real."

it's televised on espn u... so it's not just on the internet this weekend. another gorman gael is regarded as one of the elite players in the country. senior zach collins was named to the pretigous mcdonalds all american team. last year chase jeter and stephen zimmerman were honored... this year it's collins, who wasn't even a starter on last year's team. now he's an all american, playing in a game he's dreamed about since he was 10 years old and watching the other greats who've played in this game. (( )) zach collins/mcdonalds american; "those guys like allen iverson, lebron and mello, and guys like that. i didn't realize it was such a huge game and from that moment it was always in my head like wow it would be amazing to do that just like they did. so that was the starting point for me realizing what a prestigous game it was and it was a dream of mine from that age." ((chris maathuis)) there's a real cool event coming up next month here in las vegas. picture the best athletes in the world sport of soccer getting together for a game. that's what the global legends series is all about bringing the

international players together for one night at sam boyd stadium in february. this will be a who's who of soccer players right here in our own backyard. (( )) landon donovan/usa soccer;"it's an all star game on steriods. we've had all star games... best players from mls, but it' shard to compare, because soccer is truely the only global game, but it's litterally the best players from their countries comingtogether to play together, which is sort of unheard of in sports." after three months away phil mickelson is back on tour... he's playing this weekend in the career builders challenge. here he is now... on the 8th... and what a shot... welcome back... the eagle has landed... look at the backspin. he finished 4 under on the day. over on the 18th hole just an easy par five for these guys. spencer levin holes his approach for eagle.

6:25 pm
according to today's stock price. to put it in perspective, though... dish already settled with 46- other states... and only had to pay about 6- million dollars for violating the "do not call" registry./// dave courvoisier > thanks for watching for 8 news now at 6. we're always on at las vegas now dot com and our app ... along with facebook and twitter. paula francis see you tonight at 11. goodnight.///
