good morning, america. and a happy thanksgiving to you all. a blast of cold air awaits you this holiday morning. more than one-third of the country covered in snow. as people pack the streets in new york and philly, for two of the biggest parades in america. not even high winds could keep the balloons this morning. searching for sarah. breaking new details on the amish parents who fled the country with their 10-year-old daughter to avoid life-saving chemotherapy. her life at stake right now. and thanksgiving as a free man. ryan ferguson's first family holiday since leaving prison. he has his driver's license and his first iphone, and back on the basketball court. today, the tradition he and his father can finally carry on for the first time in a decade.

make a mess of this day. let's get to the boards and show you what's going on with that thing. look at the departing snow, rain and ice, as the low pulls up a little to the north here. and you can see that colder air spinning in a little behind it. did we get snow? you bet we did. about 35% of the nation is covered with snow. that's the earliest, the most we've had so early in the season, in about ten years. look how much snow is down on the ground because of that storm system moving through. wind gusts, 63-mile-per-hour to 64-mile-per-hour, from massachusetts to long island. rhode island had a 59-mile-per-hour wind gust. and look at the cold air that's gone to the deep south this morning. good morning, atlanta. 22 is the way that windchill is this morning. tallahassee, feels like 31. even orlando has a chill this morning at about 40 degrees. we have a cold thanksgiving start. but we're not the morning show that delivers one parade. ladies and gentlemen, you get a two-fer here.

right here in philadelphia we have the oldest running parade. and we have another one in new york. we have another one in philadelphia. i know we'll be going back and forth all morning long. >> that's right, sam. we will be heading to ginger. do we have ginger right now? a touch-and-go affair. such is the weather here in new york city. but, ginger, you're braving it for us this morning. will the balloons fly? >> reporter: a very happy thanksgiving it will be here at the macy's thanksgiving day parade. look behind me. the nets up. we see snoopy and woodstock, the pumpkins to the right. yes, the balloons will fly. it's certainly breezy but a little cold, i can tell you that, with hand warmers all over my body. you can see the wind speeds for the day. these are gusts you're looking at. either way, the balloons will fly. looks like we'll see the safety precautions all taken, of course. look at the energy. the energy is starting to pique.

[ gunfire ] >> that extended gun battle, really incredible, caught on camera by a neighbor in the los angeles suburb of inglewood. police say the suspect started firing at officers after taking his girlfriend and her daughter hostage during a domestic dispute. one officer was shot in the chest. but he was saved by his bulletproof vest. finally overnight, the suspect

who has a long criminal record, surrendered and released his hostages. both, thankfully, unharmed. and now, to washington. and a fresh wrinkle in the long saga of obama care. the president postponing another key aspect of the law. a development that could impact tens of thousands of americans. and abc's david kerley is at the white house right now with more. david, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. you're right. this is the second time this president is delaying a part of his signature legislation, as computer code writers are working overtime to fix the problem-plagued health care website. as the president was pardoning a thanksgiving turkey. >> i want to grant popcorn a full reprieve -- >> reporter: critics were suggesting that the latest delay in his health care plan is inexcusable. >> it really is an indication that small business is not a priority for the administration. >> reporter: the news, that the troubled website won't be ready for small businesses for another year. so, in order to meet the affordable care mandate, those

small businesses will have to go directly to insurance companies or brokers. all this, just days before the president promised that the website would finally be working. but the administration continues to roll back expectations. first, the president said -- >> by the end of this month, we anticipate that it is going to be working the way it is supposed to. >> reporter: then, it was that it will be working for the vast majority of americans. followed by, 50,000 people at a time will be able to get on. the latest from the administration -- >> that has never meant there would be zero problems with the site. >> reporter: that the sunday deadline is really not that special. >> to be clear, november 30th does not represent a relaunch of healthcare.gov. it is not a magical date. >> reporter: it is clear that the white house is trying to take the pressure off what is a relaunch of this website. you take the small business people off. and hopefully individuals will be able to buy insurance when the website is back up and running come monday, dan. we'll see how it works on monday. they think they can handle up to

50,000 to 100,000. they don't want to see a crash. >> it is a big weekend for obama care. no question. david kerley, thank you. we're getting some amazing, new pictures of the moment a tornado touched down and ripped apart a middle school in indiana. look at this. surveillance cameras capturing the scene in the gym and the hallways. president obama has freed up more federal dollars for families who lost their homes in last week's tornado outbreak across the midwest. the pictures, incredible this morning. new concerns this morning about brazil's readiness to host next year's world cup after a section of the main stadium collapsed, killing two workers. construction was nearly complete when a crane crashed on to a 500-ton metal structure, which then tore through an outer wall. a judge has approved the merger of american airlines and u.s. airways. the combined carrier, which will be the largest in the world, will keep the american airlines name. but the two will operate separately for about one more

year. overnight, we've been tracking some news from outer space. the so-called comet of the century has now reached the sun, traveling at 200 miles a second. the big question now, will the sun's powerful gravity pull the comet apart? if not, we hear on earth may be in for a dazzling light show sometime next month. and finally, a change of heart on this thanksgiving. tony rohr has been employed by the pizza hurt in elkhart, indiana, for ten years, working up to manager. but when the boss told him he had to open on thanksgiving, that was it. tony refused. and he was fired. however, when the world got out, social media exploded with outrage. and this morning, we're happy to report that pizza hut has offered tony his job back, admitting they made an error in judgment. tony was trying to protect his workers from having to work on thanksgiving. and we wish them all a happy and pizza-free thanksgiving. >> what a lovely story. >> yeah. great story. >> we've seen the shopping madness. >> right. >> grow exponentially.

sauce and football. walmart pushed back its shop-a-thon to a chorus of complaints. but that didn't stop the retail giant from cranking out 5,000 sales per second before the clock struck black friday at midnight. >> last year in the first hour, we did 10 million transactions at our register. just in the first hour. >> reporter: in one hour? that is an incredible number. incredible discounts. but we all know nothing beats free. some free things to talk about, too. jcpenney has snow globes. cvs giving out free batteries. and pet smart giving out free puppy treats to the first 100 customers today. and you can ask if any retailers are giving out something free. but ask before you walk out of the store. >> good advice. no puppy shall go hungry on this thanksgiving. time to take a look at the hottest toys of the holiday season. and we've actually called in an expert. and we're going to stay here to do it. lisa harnisch is senior vice president of toys at toys "r" us. i can't imagine a better job.

on the run to avoid medical treatment, after the courts ordered 10-year-old sarah hershberger to undergo chemotherapy to treat her leukemia. her parents who object to the treatment have taken their daughter and fled. abc's alex perez has this story. >> reporter: this morning, there's a mystery swirling around the 10-year-old amish girl who doctors say could die if she doesn't get life-saving chemotherapy. sarah hershberger and her parents who oppose the chemo therapy, have vanished, leaving the country to seek alternative treatments. >> it's not just the constitutional right. but the moral right to refuse conventional medical treatment. >> reporter: the girl's chemotherapy treatment initially worked. the tumors got smaller. but in a rare interview by phone last august, her father explains why they stopped the treatment. >> we're seeing how sick it makes her. >> reporter: hershberger says the family wanted to focus on herbal and natural remedies. >> our belief is the natural stuff will do just as much as

that stuff does, if it's god's will. >> reporter: but in october, a judge sided with the hospital, appointing a nurse to be the girl's temporary guardian to handle medical decisions. the family won't say where they are now. but have no plans to return to their ohio home any time soon. >> sarah's condition has gotten a lot better since the family has been pursuing the alternative treatment. >> reporter: doctors say without chemotherapy, the girl could die within a year. >> without chemotherapy, the survival rates are very, very poor. >> reporter: hospital officials declined to comment on the case or whether they will seek other legal action. law enforcement officials say, at this point, there is no formal search for the girl. for "good morning america," alex perez, abc news, chicago. >> really tough situation right there. wish that family the best. >> we certainly do. especially on this thanksgiving holiday. we will shift gears now. speaking of thanksgiving, it is time. our dream team of food network chefs.

the man was hit four times. luckily his wounds are not life-threatening. the woman was hit with a bullet fragment in her foot and is expected to be okay. investigators do not have a suspect or a motive. let's check on your morning commute. it's a light one out there on this thanksgiving with leyla gulen. it is friday light, excuse me, holiday light i should say, but we have one problem on highway 4 at san marco boulevard if you're heading into bay point. watch out for that as we take a live look outside at the golden gate bridge where we have holiday light conditions. take a look at that virtually empty there as we make our way northbound and southbound. dry safely everyone. thank you so

the claim coming out in a court case against two of her former assistants charged with defrauding her and her ex-husband of hundreds of thousands of dollars. today, her ex-husband taking the stand. lama hasan has more in london. lama? >> reporter: good morning to you, paula. celebrity chef nigella lawson is in a courtroom behind me giving testimony against two former assistants who are accused of embezz embezzling more than $1 million of their money. elisabetta and francheska grillo are accused of spending more than a million dollars of their money. they're pleading not guilty. one of the sister's lawyers claims in court that nigella lawson not only knew about the spending, it was part of a tacit understanding with the sisters. in return for hiding her alleged drug use from her husband. after the very public breakdown of their marriage, saatchi sent lawson an angry e-mail, which

was read in court by the judge, in which he says he believes the sisters' account. and refers to his ex-wife as high-gella. if mr. saatchi is telling the truth, then miss lawson is a habitual criminal. grillo's attorney said on wednesday -- >> you want to attack their credibility to the jury doubts they're telling the truth. >> reporter: a publicist for lawson told abc news, we can't comment as the court proceedings are alive. prosecutor jane carpenter has reportedly said the of the drug use claim thrngs is a totally false account. and the timing is not coincidence at all. and the only reaction from celebrity chef is on social media. tweeting on wednesday, holiday hotcake. the perfect recipe to show thanks for all your support. and to those who use hashtag #teamnigella. nigella lawson is due to testify

during this two-week trial at some point. but she's not due in court today. it's also worth noting that lawson will be hosting the tv show "the taste" which returns to abc in january. josh? >> lama, thank you for that. we're going to turn to a truly special thanksgiving. you remember ryan ferguson, the missouri man who was wrongfully convicted of murder back in 2004. recently released from prison, in fact, earlier this month. he is now spending his first holiday at home in a decade. and, dan, you have much more on how this man, at long last, is managing to put his whole life back together. >> a fascinating transition. we're getting a look into it this morning. on this thanksgiving morning, ryan ferguson is waking up at home with his family and his new girlfriend. he's letting us into his new life with a series of intimate pictures on his facebook page. >> this is how i knew it was over. >> reporter: after nearly a decade behind bars, ryan ferguson is finally enjoying the taste of freedom.

>> when they took the shackles off of me and i was able to hug my mother, that second, i knew. and it was incredible. >> reporter: wrongly convicted of a murder he always maintained he did not commit, the 29-year-old is reliving his 20s, with his family, friends and his new girlfriend, myka. the two began dating while ryan was still in prison, when she sent him a letter after seeing his story on television. a childhood friend tells "the daily mail" newspaper that people close to ferguson were skeptical at first. but they're now big supporters of the relationship. ferguson's facebook page has gone from free ryan, to freed ryan. and is now a chronicle of his life on the outside. >> what's next on your bucket list? >> i don't know. i need to just take care of the little things in life. get i.d. get some clothes. i'm literally starting life with nothing. other than, you know, obviously an amazing family, which is everything. >> reporter: now, he's doing just that.

driver's license, check. learning how to use his new iphone, check. even, as ryan says of this picture, spending time back in court. the basketball court. ferguson's nightmare began in 2003, when he and a friend, charles erickson, were both accused of murdering sports journalist kent heitholt. erickson accepted a plea deal and testified they committed the crime together for drinking money. >> i looked up. and ryan was over the victim. >> reporter: ferguson was convicted and sentenced to 40 years. but years later, erickson recanted and admitted he lied in his testimony against ferguson. >> it's scare that knowing they're not looking for the truth, they're looking for a conviction. >> reporter: but an appeals court overturned furgson's conviction. on november 12th, he was freed from prison for good. >> i'm happier for my parents than i am for me. they had to deal with so much. >> one more tidbit here. a decade ago, ryan and his dad went hiking in yosemite park.

they bought two cigars. they smoked one of them when they got back down from the summit and they planned to smoke the second one shortly thereafter, then ryan was arrested. today, ten years later, they will smoke that second cigar. a great father-son moment. >> enjoy that. >> happiest thanksgiving of them all. >> absolutely. time, now, to head back to philadelphia, where we find sam champion. at, again, the oldest parade in the country. sammy, how is it going? >> all right. perfection. by the way, we just introduced you to the alexis dupont high school marching band. and, by the way, where are you guys from? this is a program that mentors kids. they've got a bunch of folks dressed up as clowns this morning. everybody's with us. we're ready to keep warm. wait a minute. you have to see this over here. this is the woodside one wheels from maine. so, it's a parade that comes from all over the country, just for you, right here on the streets of philadelphia.

let's get to the boards. one or two things to talk about and show you this morning. while i dance on through this, we have a deep freeze coming in. basically, it's not just the good music, but it's a good way to keep warm. right now, the windchills are 17 in memphis. 19 in little rock. 33 in houston. this is the cold air. as that storm departs, it's just a little bit of snow left. call it lake-effect snow because it is. travers city, erie, buffalo, you guys get it. follow the dancing turkey across the board to the lake-effect snow. most of the country got a chill but it's best in the west this morning. we're live in philadelphia. that's the weather around the nation. it's going to be a beautiful thanksgiving for the bay area. our temperatures topping out in the mid to upper 60s. but watch out for the rip currents on our coastline. as we take a look at my accuweather seven-day forecast,

simmons. also "top chef" legend here. easy dessert ideas. >> "food & wine" got these recipes from sarah jordan. she's a chef at boka in chicago. these are pie bars. they're a pie you can make in a sheet pan and can cut into bars. i have sugar, brown sugar and white sugar and butter. i'm adding 2 1/2 cups of flour. very gently. right in. once it's all incorporated, that's your crust. as simple as that. you dump it out on to a pan. put a piece of plastic over it. when it gets to this stage, you can use the plastic and the back of a spoon or the back of a cup to fit into a small sheet tray. once you have it, it goes into the oven for 35 minutes at 350. and it comes out looking like this. >> a holiday treat. >> yes. i'm going to clone the classic pumpkin pie exactly. brown sugar, salt, cardamom.

these are classic pumpkin spices. clove, ground ginger. there you go. dump it all in together. and mix it all up. with the brown sugar. >> okay. >> and i have two eggs that i've whisked right here. and i'm going to put the sugar mixture right into the eggs and whip them together. you can smell that pumpkiny. >> the cardamom and the cloves. and ginger. it helps out, too, right? i'm going to dump in some pumpkin. pureed pumpkin. canned pureed pumpkin is okay to use. try to get organic if you can. and make sure it's unsweetened because you're adding your sugar. and pour that in for me. that's evaporated milk. that's all going to go in together. whisk it up until it's nice and smooth. here we have it. it goes right into your pie crust. >> gorgeous. >> bake this at 425 for 10 minutes. lower your oven. and 325 for another 25 minutes. >> letting it set for --

good morning, happy thanksgiving. i'm kristen sze. a lot to be tharpgful for this holiday week. a few traffic problems so far. leyla gulen has our forecast. a great day to fly. this is sfo. no delays at our local airports for my accuweather forecast. so we do have nice dry conditions with a cool down coming next week with the possibility of some rain. we did have an earlier sigalert that has canceled in san jose traveling in the southbound direction coming up to winchester. pretty much all that traffic has dissipat dissipated. you are looking at clear conditions right up to milpitas.
