new this morning, we're working to get more crash in cedar rapids. the iowa dot says the crash blocked all

around 3:00 this morning. according our traffic cameras traffic is moving through at this time. witnesses say it involved a semi and at least one other car. we spoke with cedar rapids police only a half an hour ago about this crash, but they declined to comment on any injuries. we received several calls about this crash overnight, and we thank you for that. whenever you see news, give us a call on newsline nine. that number is 319-365-9999. you can also email pictures and video to newsroom at kcrg dot com. former leader of communist revolution in cuba.. fidel castro has died at the age of 90. castro ruled cuba for almost a half century before his brother raul took over in 2008. this is video of current president raul castro. last night he announced his older brother died at 10:29 p.m. he ended the announcement by shouting the revolutionary slogan: "towards victory, always!" fidel castro was the face of

missile crisis. castro rose to power in 1959. he remained in office until health problems forced him to hand over control. meanwhile, a large number of people gathered in miami, the center of the cuban exile community. the crowd cheered, danced, and waved cuban flags. people were hugging each other, and others popped champagnes bottles and clanged pots. today is another shopping holiday, but with a local emphasis. small business saturday is dedicated to people checking off town. today mount vernon-lisbon merchants and volunteers are holding a "shop small saturday" celebration. that celebration is a part of a national campaign started by american express. at the event, shoppers can sign up to win community cash gift certificates. more than 60 businesses agreed to work together to support the initiative. shop small saturday will take place in mount vernon and lisbon today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"door-buster deals", back when people literally busted doors on black friday mornings? this year, was a different story. it was a rather civil scene at lindale mall around yesterday morning. though shoppers were allowed to wait inside for stores to open up, not many did. the quieter scene was due to more shopping on thanksgiving, what some call gray thursday. spots like the mall opened up in the evening, and stayed open until at least midnight. when you add that to more deals online throughout the shoppin tumbles. " "yeah, with stores opening thursday night, everybody goes out, goes home and is in bed." " according to a bankrate survey, only 23% of us adults said they would shop in stores the day after thanksgiving. that's down five points from 2014. some experts say they think cyber monday will do more even more sales this year compared to previous years. investigators with the state

gold distributing. the recycling plant in central city caught fire after multiple explosions thursday morning. people nearby couldn't leave their homes or use their furnace, for possible contaminates in the air. central city firefighters went back to the plant thursday night to put out any rekindled flames. the fire chief, james o'leary, says it's hard to prepare for dangerous explosions that this type of fire can present. a prairieburg firefighter even went to the hospital for overexertion while battling the fire. extra 50-60 pounds of weight on you. and he's in shape, he's not an older guy at all. even someone in shape, it wears you out. a good few hours of that, is takes a toll on your body " o'leary says the firefighter is back home and recovering. a state fire marshall says they will have to get somebody to move things out of the area before they can determine a

is apologizing after a crash killed six children in chattanooga, tennessee monday. "i can't fathom the anguish of the families whose children were involved in this horrific accident and that it involved one of my company's buses. nothing that i can say can take away the pain and the grief for these families. what i can say is that i'm deeply sorry for the children that were taken from their families with so much life before them. " police say bus driver johnthony walker was going too fast and crashed. investigators now say he wasn't following the designated route to drop kids off. the school district released records showing there were two written complaints against walker's speeding. a principal previously requested video of him leaving campus because of his speed. walker faces five counts of

since 1981. well, the team definitely gave the seniors a game to remember. scott saville has the highlights. hawkeye fans said good bye to 14 iowa seniors and coach ferentz and his wife mary with a big hug for steve their final son to wear an iowa uniform. selfishly nothing to do with this night it's pretty special we are very appreciative. and what a start for the hawks

and it was off to the races 75 yards for the games first touchdown. and another big play for the iowa o in the first quarter when the 2 seniors hook up cj beathard hits riley mccarron on the run and he takes off like he was shot out of cannon 77 yards for the second score of the game. ..riley 5 catches for 108 yards. we thought we would catch them with quick play action pass and it worked out perfect nebraska followed with play from an iowa senior leshun daniles breaks a tackle and rumbles 56 yards before they can drag hi down at the 8. leshun with 158 yards rushing and he went over a 1,000 for the season. i would of loved to finish the play but excellent job by everybody all i had to do is make a play and daniels scored moments later on the 4 yard touchdown and iowa led 20-3 at the break. what a day for the

in the third quarter and they tacked on a personel foul to put the ball on 13 yard line. keep my eyes downfield broke a couple of tackles put our offense in good field position. and that set up yet another touchdown for a senior.. george kittle making his return with the 1 yard td grab. and george with not one but 2 touchdown catches...this 6 yarder in the fourth gave the hawks a 33-10 lead. and yes he was a little jacked. scorin so i am going to let my emotions run and the hawkeyes added another daniels one yard score for the 40-10 win to finish the regular season 8-4 and keep the heroes trophy in iowa city for another year. we got knocked in the mouth against psu but we won 3 straight it is a

high: 50 alo: 49 dbq: 48 iow: 51 thanks britley. while there was a lot of scoring on the field for the hawkeyes, one of the biggest highlights was at halftime. officials after a house explosion in cedar rapids. at halftime, the crowd cheered for ken blazek and brock staley as they received honors for risking their lives. while the hawkeyes are done for the regular season, there's still plenty of college football today. iowa state hopes to end their season on a high note with a matchup at home against west virginia. kickoff for today's game is set for 2:30 at jack trice stadium in ames. you can watch the

swing the election from trump to democrat hillary clinton. president-elect donald trump's stock in the company building the dakota access pipeline has some worried. they're afraid any action will be skewed because of his ties. trump's 20-16 federal disclosure forms show he owned 15-thousand to 50-thousand dollars in stock for energy transfer partners. last year, he had 500- thousand to one million dollars in stock. four university of northern iowa presidential finalists are visiting the ui next week. the faculty union is planning evaluations after the candidates visit. the union president says the analysis from the presidential search committee won't be enough for the faculty to agree on who should be the next president. the last finalist is scheduled to visit the campus on december second. then the search committee will meet with board of regents. regents will likely make the decision during their meetings on the fifth and sixth. iowans filed into stores friday, hoping to nab those doorbuster deals. when it comes

caroling in the neighborhood on december 17th. a des moines based restaurant for the undead has opened a new location in eastern iowa. zombie burger opened up in the coral ridge mall yesterday. it was decked out with zombie themed elements including a mural with hawkeye fans and herky himself. the restaurant is known for creative burgers and shakes with unexpected combinations- like the zombie unicorn shake with fruity pebbles breakfast cereal. a downtown iowa city location will open on decemb imagine riding a bike across iowa. now imagine doing that for less than 15 hours. we tell you about a former hawkeye wrestler who took on his biggest challenge last month.

raul castro announced his death on cuban tv. abc's karen travers looks at the life of the leader who ruled for half a century. fidel castro was born on august 13th, 1926 in oreinte province, cuba. he was educated at private catholic schools run by

the university of havana. his passions included baseball and politics. castro hated cuba's american supported dictator, fulgencio batista, who expelled him from the country. he went to mexico and eventually secretly returned to cuba in 1956 and waged a guerilla war known as the july 26th movement. castro ousted batista and took over the country. castro became an activist for the poor and working class and promised democracy but went on to rule cuba for more than 40 years with an iron fist. he formally declared cuba a socialist state two years after his rebels calling himself a "marxist-leninist". "i'm not afraid to say i am a convinced communist. i feel honored to be a communist and i hope i will be to the last breath." in 1960, castro nationalized american businesses and joined forces with the soviet union. the u-s retaliated by breaking off diplomatic relations with cuba and imposing a trade embargo. in 1961 president john f kennedy approved a cia invasion force of 13 hundred cuban exiles who went ashore at the bay of pigs. castro was able to fend off the invasion but in 1962 american spy planes discovered he had allowed the soviets to put nuclear missles in cuba. he was a major leader in the cuban missle crisis that brought the u-s and soviet

of nuclear war. "i have directed the armed forces to prepare for any eventualities." us naval vessels moved in and the soviets backed down in exchange for a pledge that america would not attack cuba. castro was furious and said the soviets used him as a pawn in a game of nuclear chess between two titans. abc's barbara walters interviewed the cuban dictator years later about the crisis. "yes we were very close to nuclear war. very close." castro continued to promote leftist central america and africa sending in cuban troops. during that time even his critics praised his advances in health care and education. but the soviet sytle economy eventually produced dissent. in 1980, more than 125 thousand cubans, some expelled,

this just in. we have an update on the crash on i-380. police say two people have died after an accident in the south bound lanes of interstate 380 near the 1st ave west exit in cedar rapids. while was struck from behind by another vehicle. the two individuals that were in the striking vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. the officers who were in the police vehicle that was struck were treated at local hospitals for those injuries and are being monitored. the interstate will be reopened for traffic as soon as possible. no other details will be released until family members are notified and the investigation is complete. a federal judge decided the man
