In my experience the scanner doesn't play well with Windows 10 and VirtualBox. VirtualBox was unable to capture the USB to pass through to the virtual machine. A VirtualBox install on Ubuntu with the same XP VM worked fine.
You can use this scanner with VueScan but only in Windows XP. You'll need the original HP driver installed for the scanner to work, and to my knowledge the driver will only install on Windows XP or below. VueScan does work fine on WinXP.
