11:10 am
walker, congressman madison cawthorn and that's it. our time. you've been a eegreat audience. thank you all. [applause] >> more now from the conservative political active action conference held in orlando. we hear from senator marco rubio of florida. this isabout 15 minutes . >> ladies and gentlemen, please welcome senator marco rubio. [music]
11:11 am
>> thank you very much. iq. this is, you guys may not know this but i talked to the cdc this morning and this is the largest massless gathering since the super bowl apparently. since the super bowl. you know, we've got it at the number of name changes going on in america, a bunch of people got names wrong two years ago. but i have 11 minutes with you and rather than write something out, i thought i'd talk to you about something weighing on me for a long time in allseriousness . being american is hard. you know why being american is so hard, it's the customer america is not normal. let me tell you what i mean. here's what's normal. almost every person that ever lived on earth has had no freedom.
11:12 am
hundreds of billions of people, whatever that have lived through recorded human history, look at it. almost everyone that ever walked hear the overwhelming majority that have ever lived lived in a place where they didn't get their leaders, didn't have any rights. rights or whatever their leaders allow them to have. this is this phenomenon of what we call democracy and our republican liberty, it's a modern phenomenon. the american revolution. what was revolutionary about it is they had this audacious ideathat your rights come from god. not from the government, not from leaders . so being american is hard. because being american is unusual. compared to human history. one of the fascinating things is human beings live very differently in terms of the technology we use, how we address, how we communicate . nothing looks like it did
11:13 am
1000 years ago . except for one thing. human nature. human nature is unchanged. human nature is unchanged, human nature was the same 2500 years ago as it is today . that's why the bible has wisdom, the same mistakes get repeated and that's why history is so difficult to know. it's what the founders of this nation understood and they understand human nature was if you ever got power, there would always be people that would want to make everybody else live, think, say the things they wanted them to say and do the things they wanted them to dothey go protections againstit . because none of us are immune . i'll tell you i've lived my life in the united states of america. freedom and liberty is all i've ever done. but i was raised by people and surrounded by people that know what life is likein other countries.
11:14 am
so they know how special america is and they know what real tyranny looks like in real oppression . and frankly, even though they had an enormous impact on my life even i as i look back now took for granted some of their warnings years ago. about what happened to a society and to a people and we empower those who believe that their job is to tell the rest of us how to live and think and believe. and i think in many ways if you want to define what's so unique about this moment in our history is that the first time perhaps in recent memory and certainly in recent history americans have come face-to-face with what it looks like when people use power to impose their will on society. what's most interesting about this is marxism which is so many people have fled to get away from from various countries, from venezuela, cuba, nicaragua. everybody thinks marxism is
11:15 am
an economic theory marxism is more than an economic theory . marxism is a viewpoint, it's a philosophy at the core of that philosophy is there are handful of peoplethat know what is good and what is right . and they're smarter and better thaneverybody else . and what we need is a system that empowers them. so to enforce that on everybody else and in essence to do for you what you're not smart enough , what you'renot good enough to do for yourself . that's been infused by every aspect of our lives. there are few people who call themselves marxists . there never self-described marxists. the back and read the articles from 1956 and 57 and 58 when the new york times reporter to interview ll castro, he didn't say i'm marxists. those artists said he's a romantic figure and he wears a rosary and he believes in god and he's only going to be in power for a year and that is going to go off and i don't know.
11:16 am
that's what he said. marxists lie. and the reason they live is because if theytold you they work you never let them get where they want to get . so they live. [applause] i believe there are a lot of people influenced by marxism that don't even realize they're being influenced by marxism. and it's infused every aspect of our life and of our society. so for the first time in my lifetime, and probably our lifetime, we have witnessed things wehave never seen in this country before . for the first time we started to see the momentum. there's not a speech code. every single person in this room and the overwhelming majority of people you know are one word away. doesn't matter if it's 13 years old when you said it. one word, one statement, one retreat, one white away from destroying your life . there are kids in america
11:17 am
that have had their admissions to a college revoked. because of something they said or did or light on social media when they were 14 . but it goes beyond that. there are now certain things you're not allowed to say on a college campus . it will give you a permit to speak about it. certainly wouldn't hire you to do it. and so that's the first time people have come face-to-face with that reality. the first time we've seen basically digital mobs descend on people and say let's destroy this person's reputation. take away their livelihood, take away their voice. cause we don't like the approach for something they said even if it's totally out of context . i don't understand about canceling podcasts, of all the thingsyou're going to cancel . listen to a podcast takes effort. if you define the thing, download it. it's not like some radio
11:18 am
station and you turn the channel and you met them. for a podcast, takes work. but that's beside the point. but it went further than that. many of you perhaps come from states or lifting places where rules are important. rules are very important. depending on what the rule is. so for example you have to go to a place and you go to this restaurant and they say you got to wear a mask but what they're saying is you have to wear a mask from the time you walk in five feet until you sit down.then you can take it off. and let me tell you in march 2020 when nobody knew what this thing was and we were all, our hands were from the disinfectant . i get it, let's figure this thing out but now, for the first time in american history you have people
11:19 am
having to produce papers to go in and sit somewhere, to go to the state of the union. i took the test yesterday, they took my temperature. all this stuff. i don't want to get into that becauseyou're aware of it . this is what's happening now in america is what happens after 20 years of this same marxist propaganda in every aspect of our lives and now we come face-to-face with it. is the most valuable thing we have. you can always cut taxes, rollback regulations. you can always select better people but when freedom is lost and it's eroded it is so hard toreclaim and get back . [applause] so that's why the people i live among the neighborhood i've lived in my entire life, you see the fury desperation in their voices . imagine that you once lived in a country you had to flee
11:20 am
because inschool they were telling your kids god didn't exist, turn your parents in if they say something against the revolution and by way , if your parents might be executed depending on what they did. so you fled. now imagine you're livingin a country where some of the same things seem to be happening again. now yourkids are being pulled inschool things about history, about society and our country that are untrue . you'd react very strongly to it . the people who lived under the systems, warning . that is that after we started there to read and they never stop. it's an insatiable appetite for power and itwill never end . there's nothing that will try to control. no aspect of your life and will try to influence.
11:21 am
and if this trendcontinues and i tell you now because it's happening all over the world we will live to see the day where mainstream judeo-christian values, where excerpts out of the bible are considered hate speech . look, i have very limited time, we could go on forever but i'll close with this. no matter where you stand on the ukrainian russian situation, the one thing i think everyone could agree on is the people of ukraine are conspiring this world. i don't know if you've watched the images in the last 48 hours. you have 70 something-year-old man, elderly women, younger children taking up arms. prepared to sacrifice everything. i don't know if you've heard the audio of those 13 defenders of snake island . they responded you know, in french. about what the russian ships to do. no matter how youfeel, here's what it reminds me of . it reminds you how valuable freedom and liberty is because these are people saying we used to be slaves. we refuse to live under tyranny.
11:22 am
and what reminds us of. it reminds us, it should remind us of two things. how precious freedom and liberty are. how quickly it can be lost . the second thing it should remind us is there's a reason why we have freedom and we've had liberty. because people at 1.4 willing to do that for our country. they were willing to die and willing to sacrifice for us. [applause] freedom and liberty are being threatened again but no one here is beingasked to die. no one here is being asked to take up arms .we're being asked to win elections, speak out, be courageous. to raise our voices, call it up for what it is and it's happening and i'll close with this. it's happening because i'm telling you now across the state and across america there are people that may not agree with us on what taxes
11:23 am
should be or agree with us on howmuch regulation there should be . people that may not agree with us on a variety of issues. there are people that have never voted the same way any of you have a presidential race and their angry. and they're getting rid of school board members because they are coming for their kids and they're getting rid of local government officials because they're coming for their business and they will get rid of enteral leaders coming for their freedom. these are people that are not ideological. here's what they believe in. common sense wisdom and values. the notion that parentsshould have the predominant role to play in their children's lives . that people should speak freely. that this is the greatest nation on earth, not an inherently evil one. that's why i believe for all the negatives we've heard, the pendulum is swinging. the pendulum is swinging and
11:24 am
i believe we are on the precipice, on the verge of a reinvigoration of the american spirit that will not just strengthen america. it will leave us freer and more prosperous thanwe've ever been so let's go out and make this happen . let's keep cpac in florida. thank you, god bless you. >> the state of the union address live 8 pm eastern on c-span or the c-span video app. >> next, a conversation on
