This week Victoria and Debbie discuss the topic that is on everyones minds - Brexit. Discussing how the campaigns have been received, how it is separating the nation - but what positive impact it has made on the deaf community. They also talk about what this means for business - and whether this decision can be seen as an opportunity... PLEASE NOTE: This podcast is neither REMAIN or LEAVE orientated.

This week, Victoria and I discuss Life and Deaf, shown recently on BBC 4. Described by the BBC as "an immersive, experiential film in BSL about the deaf world, with its unique humour and culture. There is no score, no commentary and none of the conventions of normal film-making." This truly is like nothing I had ever seen.    If you haven't seen it, we highly recommend it and you can check it out on iplayer
Victoria is shortly off on holiday, so on this weeks podcast we decided to talk about our favourite topic - coffee!  No, it’s not just a ramble about our favourite coffee shops and coffee blends!   There have been a number of stories about coffee chains all over the world and how they are creating good examples of employing deaf barista's, that have gone viral since the start of the year.  We discuss the good (and bad) experiences that have gone viral across the deaf and hearing world...

Coworking represents a burgeoning model in an evolving economy. As a portion of the workforce transitions from traditional employer-employee engagement to more fluid, independent and entrepreneurial contributions, the elements of space and design have adapted accordingly. Coworking facilities have responded to shifting dynamics, providing a shared environment in which professionals can work autonomously and cooperatively. With freelancers, technologists, coders and members of the creative class...

This week, Debbie and Alice are back at the mic discussing a recent article about a Deaf man who was arrested, along with his hearing brother, because he used the internationally recognised sign for Deaf and the police believed he was making a rude gesture. We look into other similar stories in the US and discuss how instances like this might be avoided through basic education and understanding.
In 2012, the United Way of Northern New Jersey released its first statewide ALICE report, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. The individuals known as ALICE live and work in our communities, yet do not earn enough to afford basic necessities. What ALICE tells us about New Jersey is bracing: Despite being one of the wealthiest states in the nation, nearly 40 percent of our population struggles to provide food, housing, child care, transportation and health care, even...

A workforce-development practice prominently and effectively deployed in international settings, apprenticeship has generated heightened interest in the United States as of late. President Barack Obama has sought to double the number of apprentices within five years, while New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has sponsor the LEAP Act, which would deliver a federal tax credit to employers who hire apprentices. These efforts seek to fortify weaknesses undermining both the supply and demand sides of the...

This week Victoria and Debbie discuss the concept of being 'signing impaired'.  They talk about the fact that it is often perceived as the deaf person as being 'hearing impaired' - but an interesting way to look at things is considering the hearing person as being 'signing impaired' if they are unable to communicate in sign language. This podcast also discusses the deaf culture and how the model of the deaf community is changing.
